TELL CONGRESS: THE US MUST WELCOME PALESTINIAN REFUGEES, NOT SHUT THE DOOR ON THEM

A congressional effort is finally underway calling on the administration to recognize and prioritize Palestinian refugees in Gaza with family in the United States.

If implemented, this policy could save the lives of thousands of Palestinians and unite them with their families in the United States while we work for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. 

Rep. Greg Casar, Sen. Dick Durbin, and Rep. Pramila Jayapal are leading a bicameral letter expressing strong support for a Priority-2 (P-2) designation under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) for Palestinians in Gaza with family in the United States. The Biden administration is reportedly considering this policy change.¹

The U.S. must recognize and welcome Palestinian refugees — not shut the door on them. 

Palestinians are so rarely granted U.S. refugee status that, of the over 60,000 refugees resettled in the United States in 2023, fewer than 0.1% were Palestinians.²

This bicameral effort led by Rep. Casar and Sen. Durbin is strongly urging the White House for a Priority-2 (P-2) designation under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) for Palestinians in Gaza with family members in the United States.

A GAZA C’E’ UN’EMERGENZA NELL’EMERGENZA

Ciao Alessio,

ti scrivo per parlarti di un’emergenza nell’emergenza: l’imminente arrivo dell’estate e del caldo peggiora drammaticamente le condizioni igienico sanitarie a Gaza. La scarsità di acqua sta diventando ancora più forte, con le conseguenze letali che ne derivano: malattie e morte. 

Già oggi il caldo e l’accumulo di rifiuti e liquami stanno creando il mix perfetto perché si generi una vera e propria catastrofe sanitaria.  

Centinaia di migliaia di persone sono costrette a vivere in condizioni disumane, a bere acqua sporca e contaminata, tra gli insetti che brulicano ovunque.  

In queste condizioni nuove epidemie di epatite A e di colera sono inevitabili. Lo sappiamo, sono malattie che prosperano in luoghi sovraffollati e privi di servizi igienici adeguati.   

Sai che nell’area di Al-Mawasi, designata come “zona umanitaria”, vicino a Rafah, oltre 550 mila sfollati stanno sopravvivendo in condizioni intollerabili, dovendo condividere una latrina ogni 4.130 persone?   

Il sistema sanitario a Gaza comunque è già al collasso, con ospedali e strutture mediche che faticano a fornire cure essenziali in un contesto in cui apparecchi, medicinali e personale sono assolutamente insufficienti per un numero di pazienti altissimo, per di più in condizioni igieniche scarse senza accesso all’acqua pulita.  

La situazione è disperata. Lo sanno bene i malati come Ibrahim, che oggi è accampato con la sua famiglia in una tenda nel cortile dell’ospedale di Al Aqsa. In questo tragico scenario, man mano che la sua salute peggiora sente che sta perdendo la speranza. 

Alessio, noi ci siamo dati un obiettivo: portare più aiuti possibili entro luglio, prima che l’estate e il caldo rendano ancora più pericolosa l’assenza di acqua pulita. Ci aiuti a raggiungerlo?  

Porta acqua pulita e beni essenziali a Gaza e salva così la vita a persone come Ibrahim. Il TUO aiuto tempestivo farà la differenza in questa stagione così critica.

Hello Alessio,

I am writing to you to tell you about an emergency within an emergency: the imminent arrival of summer and the heat are dramatically worsening the health and hygiene conditions in Gaza. The water shortage is becoming even more acute, with the resulting lethal consequences: disease and death. 

Already today the heat and the accumulation of waste and sewage are creating the perfect mix for a real health catastrophe to arise.  

Hundreds of thousands of people are forced to live in inhuman conditions, to drink dirty and contaminated water, among the insects that swarm everywhere.  

Under these conditions new epidemics of hepatitis A and cholera are inevitable. We know, they are diseases that thrive in overcrowded places without adequate sanitation.   

Do you know that in the Al-Mawasi area, designated as a “humanitarian zone”, near Rafah, over 550 thousand displaced people are surviving in intolerable conditions? having to share one latrine for every 4,130 people?   

However, the healthcare system in Gaza is already collapsing, with hospitals and medical facilities struggling to provide essential care in a context in which equipment, medicines and personnel are absolutely insufficient for a very high number of patients, moreover in poor hygienic conditions without access to clean water.  

The situation is desperate. Patients like Ibrahim, who today is camped with his family in a tent in the courtyard of Al Aqsa hospital, know this well. In this tragic scenario, as his health worsens he feels he is losing hope. 

Alessio, we have set ourselves a goal: to bring as much aid as possible by July, before the summer and the heat make the absence of clean water even more dangerous. Can you help us get there?  

Bring clean water and essential goods to Gaza and thus save the lives of people like Ibrahim. YOUR timely help will make a difference in this critical season.
