INTERNATIONAL ADVENTURE CONFERENCE TREUCHTLINGEN 2023

Feb 15, 2023 | News from the network

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/international-adventure-conference-treuchtlingen-2023/

The 10th International Adventure Conference of the Adventure Tourism Research Association will be hosted by the University of Applied Management at the Adventure Campus in Treuchtlingen, Germany from the 7th to the 9th of June 2023. The conference invites academics, students, and practitioners alike. The conference includes keynotes, parallel sessions, and joined outdoor activities. It is a gathering of adventure enthusiasts who want to help shape our adventure tourism future.

This year’s theme is called ‘Being-with and being well in nature: Our tentacular adventures’

The idea of adventure is inevitably intensely human, socially construed, and stems from the very emergence of our species as it struggled to survive, to move and to procreate. For early humans, every day had elements of risk, and discovery, connection and understanding with a material and more-than-human world was essential. These simple ideas have informed conference themes emanating from an anthropocentric perspective for most of our past nine events. There have been lots of ideas about the benefits of careful risk-taking, of outdoor exercise, of adventure tourism’s potential in benefitting remote rural, coastal and mountain communities. And, increasingly, the idea of outdoor leisure, adventurous and fast or slow, as a salve for many of the societal ills of our times: obesity, depression, heart disease, screen addiction and so forth. We therefore wish to draw some of these ideas together in this call for contributions to the tenth IAC.

OUTDOOR SPORTS IN URBAN AND PERIURBAN AREAS: INNOVATIVE ACTIONS CALL FOR PROPOSALS

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/outdoor-sports-in-urban-and-periurban-areas-innovative-actions-call-for-proposals/

The New European Bauhaus is a creative and interdisciplinary initiative that connects the European Green Deal to our living spaces and experiences.

The European Urban Initiative (EUI) has recently launched a €50 million call to support urban innovation and cities capabilities to build a sustainable urban development. This call is a perfect translation into practise of the core values of the New European Bauhaus (NEB): aesthetics, sustainability, and inclusion. It will allow the second generation of NEB demonstrators to be implemented after the first six projects that were financed under Horizon Europe. The EUI is part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Commissioner for Cohesion Policy and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said: “Innovative projects on the ground translating the New European Bauhaus values into reality is crucial for an inclusive green transition that provides high-quality living solutions to all. I call on EU cities’ vision and creativity to make the most from the funding opportunity that Cohesion Policy’s European Urban Initiative offers today to improve the life of citizens and set an example for addressing complex urban challenges the NEB way.”

Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, said: “Cities play a major role in sustainable transformation. They are uniquely placed not only to engage citizens, but also to build upon cultural diversity and cultural heritage to transform our living spaces and mind-sets. With this new call, we anchor the values of the NEB in the building and functioning of cities, at the closest to citizens. I am looking forward to seeing the projects come to life and spread across Europe.”

The call looks for projects that trigger transformation in the cities and have the potential to generate investments and inspire other Cohesion Policy projects, in line with the principles of NEB. The projects have to be related to these four themes:

  • constructing and renovating in a spirit of circularity and carbon neutrality
  • preserving and transforming cultural heritage
  • adapting and transforming buildings for affordable housing solutions
  • regenerating urban spaces.

The ERDF will finance 80% of the cost of selected projects. Each project can receive up to €5 million. Part of this funding will support the transfer of innovative solutions to other cities in Europe to have an even bigger impact, especially in cities and regions most in need of transformation support towards the green future. In the longer term, supported urban authorities will set up transfer partnerships with three other cities interested to replicate parts or the full projects. The call is open until mid-January 2023.

Background

The New European Bauhaus was launched by President von der Leyen in September 2021. It adds a cultural dimension to the Green Deal and accelerates the green transition with change on the ground that combines the values of aesthetics, sustainability, and inclusion.

With a dedicated ERDF budget of €450 million, the European Urban Initiative (EUI) is a new instrument supporting the urban dimension of Cohesion Policy in 2021-2027. A minimum of 8% of the ERDF resources in each Member State must be invested in priorities and projects selected by cities themselves and based on their own sustainable urban development strategies.

Beyond supporting innovation, the EUI supports the capacities of all urban areas across Europe. It provides evidence for policymaking and sharing knowledge on sustainable urban development, including via the Urban Agenda for the EU.

The EUI is managed by the Commission and the French Region Hauts-de-France. It builds on the Urban Innovative Actions of the 2014-2020 programming period, but has an even stronger focus on urban innovation, sustainability, and replicability in other cities.

Why should the outdoor sports stakeholded participate to the call and get involved?

The outdoor sports sector and the Bauhaus initiative have a mutual interest in urban regeneration, social cohesion and active, healthy communities. The following topics clearly link the benefits of Outdoor sports with the objectives of the New European Bauhaus.

Physical health and mental wellbeing through green spaces:

The findings from the BOSS project have provided evidence that correlates exercise in green spaces to improvements in physical health and especially mental well-being is now very significant. While there is clear evidence that increased fitness and better cardiovascular function, reduced blood pressure, obesity, resting heart rate and a positive influence on other health markers are all associated with physical activity – but the evidence now shows that participants gain greater benefits from exercising in green space. Research has further shown that exercise in green spaces generates positive effects for mood, resilience, feelings of revitalisation, positive engagement and restoration for people living in urban settings. Negative affective states like stress, depression, anxiety, tension, confusion, anger, rumination, loneliness and neuroticism could be reduced by exercise in green space.

Environmental awareness and connections: in the transition towards a greener economy, the awareness of our human dependence on nature and biodiversity is of significant importance. Europe’s level of urbanisation reached 75% of its population and is expected to increase to approximately 83.7% by 2050.Therefore, the development of beautiful and accessible natural areas in our urban settings is becoming increasingly important by creating greater opportunity for citizens to connect with nature in their daily routines and experience its benefits.

Active spaces: sustainable and aesthetic places of living can successfully incorporate a rethinking and redevelopment of spatial planning, thus to maximise individuals’ possibility to move in any moment of their daily routines. The concept of ‘active spaces’ is increasingly being applied in cities across Europe, transforming local communal space in order to help to decrease sedentarism and increase the health and wellbeing of citizens.

Social inclusion through active spaces: the concept of active spaces makes use of built environments in a smart way (buildings and green spaces) in order to provide equal access for all, regardless of income category, social or cultural status or physical condition: wellbeing through movement should be accessible to all in a clean, sustainable and beautiful future.

Green Playspaces – open to community-driven initiatives: rethinking our shared spaces is also about creating the conditions for bottom-up initiatives and allowing activities to take place out in the open. Sport and physical activity are excellent ways to do this, mixing communities and creating new interpretations of existing places with very limited risk of tensions that arise with the appropriation of public spaces for private interests.

Strands & Objectives

The EUI includes two strands:

  • Strand 1- Support of innovative actions, and
    • Support of innovative actions are:
      • To identify and support the testing of transferable and scalable innovative solutions to address issues relating to sustainable urban development at Union level;
      • To collect and share results from experimentations and support transfer activities, in view of fostering innovation capacities and knowledge building for all EU urban areas and mainstreaming innovative solutions in sustainable urban development, under Article 11 of the ERDF/CF Regulation and beyond.
  • Strand 2- Support of capacity and knowledge building, territorial impact assessments, policy development and communication are:
    • Capacity building part
      • To improve the capacities of cities in the design of sustainable urban development policies, strategies and practices in an integrated and participative way;
      • To improve the design and implementation of sustainable urban development policies, strategies and action plans in cities.
    • Knowledge building, territorial impact assessments, policy development and communication part
      • To develop a knowledge base in support of better sustainable urban development policy and strategy design, implementation and mainstreaming;
      • To ensure easier access to horizontal and thematic knowledge and share knowhow on sustainable urban development;
      • To support the Urban Agenda for the EU, and upon request of Member State(s), to possibly support the intergovernmental cooperation on urban matters.

The Call will not be prescriptive with regard to the nature of expected proposals. However, cities are invited to consider the four following themes which have the greatest potential to generate innovative solutions and create a clear demonstration effect to inspire the use of Cohesion policy in urban areas:

  • Construction and renovation in a spirit of circularity and carbon neutrality
  • Preserving and transforming cultural heritage
  • Adapting and transforming buildings
  • Regenerating urban spaces

What kind of projects are they looking for?

  • Innovative
    • Innovative Actions support pilot projects that have never been tested anywhere else in Europe. This is an evolutionary approach where the innovation lies in the new elements added to the existing idea, or as a revolutionary approach with completely new solutions never tested before in the policy field concerned in the EU.
  • Participative
    • Participation and co-creation with Partners, relevant stakeholders, and target groups, are key for the development and implementation of genuinely innovative and experimental projects.
  • Measurable
    • A robust methodology is necessary to measure expected impacts, as well as clear and quantified results to capture the expected change in the local situation resulting from the project.
  • Transferable and scalable
    • Based on lessons drawn from the project and shared to a wider audience of policy makers and practitioners, the Innovative actions have the potential of being scaled and transferred to other urban areas across Europe.
  • Of good quality
    • Proposals must prove to be justified, realistic, consistent, and coherent. They should also be ready to be managed effectively, implemented swiftly, and demonstrate value for money.

What kind of support is offered?

  • Funding: Each project can receive up EUR 5 million. Part of this allocation will support the transfer of these innovative solutions to other cities in Europe to have an even bigger societal impact!
  • Knowledge and Capacity Building: They provide a knowledge environment for cities to ensure easier access to knowledge and share the know-how on sustainable urban development! They are interested in strengthening your capacities in designing such strategies in an integrated and participative way.
  • Duration: project implementation should take place within a maximum period of 3,5 years.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The following authorities may apply for support to undertake the EUI-IA:
    • First category: Any urban authority of a local administrative unit defined according to the degree of urbanisation (DEGURBA) of Eurostat as city, town or suburb (corresponding to DEGURBA code 1 or DEGURBA code 2 of Eurostat) comprising at least 50 000 inhabitants.
    • Second category: An association or grouping of urban authorities with legal status of organised agglomeration composed by Local Administrative Units, where the majority (at least 51%) of inhabitants lives in Local Administrative Units defined according to the degree of urbanisation (DEGURBA) of Eurostat as cities, towns or suburbs (corresponding to DEGURBA code 1 or DEGURBA code 2) and where the total combined population is at least 50 000 inhabitants.
    • Third category: An association or grouping of urban authorities without legal status of organised agglomerations where all the urban authorities involved (Main Urban Authority – hereinafter: MUA, and Associated Urban Authorities – hereinafter: AUA) are Local Administrative Units defined according to the degree of urbanisation (DEGURBA) of Eurostat as cities, towns or suburbs (corresponding to DEGURBA code 1 or DEGURBA code 2) and where the total combined population (MUA and AUA) is at least 50 000 inhabitants.

THE “SPORT FOR NATURE – SETTING A BASELINE” HANDBOOK HAS BEEN LAUNCHED

Nov 23, 2022 | News

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/the-sport-for-nature-handook-has-been-launched-by-unep-iucn-and-ioc/

Inspired by the UNFCCC’s Sport for Climate Action Framework (2018), along with IUCN and IOC’s guidance, and in support of the nature MTS pillar, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the post-2020 Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals, the Sports for Nature: Setting a Baseline handbook will support sport to be a critical partner for change.

THE’SPORTS FOR NATURE HANDBOOK HAS BEEN LAUNCHED

This joint initiative by the UN Environment Programme with the support of the International Olympic Committee, along with Loughborough University and GRID Arendal has enabled the creation of a handbook identifying the place of sport in nature and the impacts resulting from the development of different sport disciplines, including their value chains, infrastructure and events. Against the backdrop of the triple global crises of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, the document provides a framework that highlights the urgency, dependency and impact of the sport sector in order to highlight actions that can be taken to improve environmental mitigation and conservation. A series of initiatives and case studies are presented in support of the document, illustrating current efforts by sport organisations around the world to partner with conservation organisations to halt the deterioration of natural areas vulnerable to sport impacts.

THE ROLE OF OUTDOOR SPORTS

Despite being a document addressed to a large audience within the sport sector, Outdoor Sports are well represented by the affinity of the subject, concerned by the effects of the ecological crisis and being a regular witness of its impacts on the landscape, but also through a number of particular mentions that give them a role within the framework :

“Outdoor sports immerse the participant in the natural environment and rely on clean air, clean water, and healthy spaces for safe play. For many generations, sport managers and participants have taken the natural environment for granted (Orr and Inoue 2019), developing complex dependencies in their supply chains, schedules, and systems which assume the natural environment will go unchanged. The full enjoyment of the environment is also not equal for everyone as other factors such as disability, gender, race, socio-economic status and geographical location also impact to what extent one interacts with the environment. This report reviews how sport’s intimate relationship with nature might be leveraged for actions to address nature loss, and how sport organisations can become central partners in supporting nature-based work in their communities.” (Sports For Nature Handbook, 2022).

3 KEY QUESTIONS

The research on which this paper is based conducted focus groups with 109 sport organisations in 30 different sports and 48 countries. This allowed a survey to be carried out on the position of the different actors on the issue of the global crisis and the position of sport in relation to it, taking into account both dependency and impacts. To this end, three main questions were used as the basis for the discussion:

  1. Do sport organisations see nature to be important?
  2. What is sport currently doing to address environmental issues?
  3. What capacities do sport organisations have to address environmental issues?

The responses allowed a number of preliminary considerations to be made:

Nature is important: Participants agreed that nature is important but were unclear on what role their organisations might play in protecting it and what tools were available to them.

Climate comes first: Reducing emissions is the current objective, while efforts to address wider environmental issues are piecemeal, at best.

Show me how: While interest is high, practical knowledge among sport managers is low, and much remains unknown about biodiversity loss and pollution.

This will require resources: The key barrier preventing further action among sport organisations is a lack of internal resources: insufficient funding, lack of dedicated human resources, and poor institutional knowledge on nature topics.

“A GAME PLAN FOR SPORT”

Taking into account these insights in relation to the level of awareness of the nature importance, climate change as a priority and the need for practical knowledge and resources, the Sports for Nature document offers a guide to start assessing the impact of sports organisations in order to develop an appropriate mitigation and adaptation strategy:

1 – Set a baseline for nature

“The first major opportunity for sport organisations to address nature is to review their site (or the places they play, if not directly managed by the organisation) and operations and take stock of any pollution caused by their activities, plastic pollution, outdated or unkempt facilities that may be having negative impacts on nature, any particularly run-down or overused areas of terrain affecting existing ecosystems, and use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals on site, and impacts caused by their activities.”

ENOS contribution: The first step in managing impacts is to identify them in order to target the problem at the source, allowing sustainable solutions to be implemented. Through the SEE (Sustainability and Environmental Education) project, a series of reports have been developed identifying the impacts associated with different outdoor sports through a survey of protected areas and sports federations in Europe. On the SEE website you can find all the reports related to sustainable development, impact and perception for the outdoor sector.

2 – Align with the Mitigation and Conservation Hierarchy

Avoid: Avoiding negative impacts on nature.

Reduce: Minimizing the harm caused by any unavoidable impacts.

Restore: Working to improve damaged ecosystems.

Renew: Contribute to proactively creating ecosystems, such as artificial reefs.

ENOS contribution: While the first two objectives have been addressed through different actions such as the publication of the policy position paper on the European Green Deal, the signing of the UNFCCC climate change framework, and the publication of the strategic priorities, the challenge of implementing measures for the restoration and renovation of natural areas remains a challenge for the sector. We need to do more, as evidenced by the words of Hans Brunyck, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, during EuroMeet 2022 when he argued that “restoration is the way forward for the outdoor sector to provide a unique response from the world of sports”.

3 – Work with others

Environmental knowledge is already plentiful among eager stakeholders waiting to be activated by sport organisations and events. These stakeholders may include: local governments, sponsors, volunteers, environmental non-profit organisations, consultants, and academics, among others.

ENOS contribution: The objective and mission of ENOS as a network is to be able to connect the different members with each other to exchange best practices, develop projects and leverage potential synergies. By creating a link between political institutions and grassroots organisations as well as the research sector and training organisations, ENOS is able to strategically represent the sector, share knowledge and provide members some guidance on capacity building. The environmental sector is now a key partner in the development of European public policies, as evidenced by the existing partnerships with environmental non-profit organisations.

4 – Educate and advocate for nature

“Perhaps the most significant opportunity for sport to take action for nature is to educate its vast audience of sport fans and participants, its partners, and its broad supplier network on nature issues. It’s also critical for sport organisations to leverage their position to support awareness-raising campaigns that will galvanize their network to advocate for solutions with governments and decision-makers.”

ENOS contribution: As outdoor enthusiasts, we at ENOS have seen the power of outdoor sports as a multiplier when it comes to transmitting a message that allows us to adapt our activites to the necessary ecological transition. Through different European projects such as BOSS or SEE, we have been able to demonstrate the usefulness of sport as a social and educational tool. For this reason, the SEE project, with a duration of three years, aims to produce a toolkit with a series of pedagogical resources for trainers and other stakeholders in charge of the environmental education in the field.

The conclusions of the handbook are closed by three recommendations or next steps as priorities for the sports sector to become key role-players in the global strategy to address the triple planetary crisis and become nature positive:

Co-create a new framework for action with sport

Convene working groups to implement action for nature

Share, translate and coordinate information

“As our ecosystems offer the water, air, food, and materials that support all life on Earth, biodiversity loss is a critical threat to all activities, including sport. In fact, without a healthy natural environment, sport simply cannot function. And yet, despite the availability of some guidance on biodiversity actions in sport, little has been done to address these issues on a systematic scale. The solutions to climate change include mitigation (i.e. reducing emissions to prevent worsening climate conditions) and adaptation (i.e. developing response strategies to alleviate harm caused by climate change in the present and future).” (Sports For Nature, 2022)

NEWSLETTER DA MIKE MCCLURE, PRESIDENTE EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR OUTDOOR SPORTS (ENOS)

ENOS NEWSLETTER OTTOBRE 2022

MIKE MCCLURE, PRESIDENTE ENOS

Like many others who attended the Euro’meet, I returned home feeling energised, enthused and also extremely honoured to have been part of such an amazing event. The Euro’meet event over the years has developed into a seminal opportunity for networking, sharing and learning within the outdoor sports sector. If you were unable to attend there are still lots of resources available as a result.

The focus this year was on “Green sports for a greener and healthier Europe.” We are facing four distinct crises at this time, climate, biodiversity, unsustainable consumption and human health. These are all interconnected and the event helped us to focus on what the outdoor sports sector can help deliver in relation to these.

The event was highly participatory and while we had keynote presentations, this year there was a strong focus on opportunities for discussion and sharing. This is of immeasurable value. As a result the collective delegates produced a set of strategic priorities for the outdoor sports sector in relation to the topics and these provide an excellent framework for ENOS’ work but also the work of all of us in this sector over the next two years.

Until 2024!!

Mike McClure

ENOS Chairman

WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE BEST HOST FOR THE OUTDOOR SPORTS EUROMEET 2024!

The Outdoor Sports Euro’meet is a biennial professional conference, is open to all and has a strong focus on sustainability. It brings together key stakeholders from outdoor sports, tourism, the environment and local development to discuss and share knowledge on the strategic development of outdoor sports. This event is managed by ENOS (the European Network of Outdoor Sports) in partnership with a local organizing committee and normally takes place at the end of September. A key element of the Euro’meet is aiming to ensure that it is managed in ways that are as sustainable as possible and the carbon impact is both measured and offset.

ENOS is a non for profit European network whose mission is “Taking action together for the sustainable and responsible development of outdoor sports across Europe”. https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/. Members are other European networks, professional outdoor providers, universities, federations and clubs and both national and regional public bodies.

Philosophy: The development and management of the Outdoor Sports Euro’meet is a partnership arrangement between the local host area and ENOS. The partnership working is based on key values of trust, commitment, reliability, efficiency and open-ness with a key theme of sustainability running through it.

The host candidate should consider the event as an investment in outdoor sports development and knowledge sharing for its area. This event enables sharing of good practice and the opportunity to explore different ideas, thereby encouraging coordinated and concerted solutions. It is an excellent opportunity for the host candidate to develop learning and skills within their area.

Host candidates are likely to be local authorities or other not for profit bodies from the sports, environment, tourism, or local development sector who have responsibility for the sustainable development of outdoor sports. It is important that the host candidate develops a local partnership involving representatives from a range of relevant sectors.

There is an extensive level of organisation required for the Outdoor Sport Euro’meet and therefore the local host candidate needs to have the capacity, required time and availability to do it effectively, in partnership with the ENOS Management Committee.

The host candidate also must secure an appropriate budget to run an event of this scale with up to 300 delegates attending.

Format of the event

The local organizing committee in conjunction with the ENOS Management Committee has an opportunity to shape the programme to meet local needs and to be innovative and creative.

However, the normal format of the event is as follows:

  1. It will take place over 3 days.
  2. It is an “in-person” event but there should be consideration to certain elements being hybrid or at least recorded for further dissemination.
  3. It will normally take place at the end of September but there should be liaison to ensure that the date does not clash with other partner events such as the Europarc conference and the European Outdoor Summit.
  4. There should be a strong encouragement, incentives and recommendations for delegates to travel as sustainably as possible to the event.
  5. The normal language of the event is English and translation to the local language is likely to be required.
  6. There will be an opening and closing ceremony and plenary session.
  7. There will be at least 1 and a maximum of 3 key themes to be explored throughout the event in relation to outdoor sport development and management.
  8. There will be a keynote speaker to set the scene for each of the themes.
  9. There will be a range of speakers and facilitators for workshops that will be collated through an open call with clear section criteria.
  10. There will be a significant opportunity for discussion, networking and sharing of ideas.
  11. There will be practical site visits and activities that showcase developments and/or challenges in the local area (linked to the agreed themes).
  12. There may be a networking or specific work day the day before the event.
  13. The ENOS General Assembly will take place at the event (usually in an evening).
  14. There should be a closing conference dinner.
  15. There should be the opportunity for delegates to remain on after the event to explore the area and participate in further outdoor sports activities.

Photocredit: www.proshooto.com

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/report-into-broader-sustainability-issues-for-outdoor-sports/

SEE PROJECT: A SUCCESSFUL WEEK OF EXCHANGE AT THE CREPS OF VALLON-PONT-D’ARC

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/see-project-a-successful-week-of-exchange-at-the-creps-of-vallon-pont-darc/

The SEE exchanges: towards the construction of a toolkit for environmental education through the practice of nature sports

The aim of the Sustainability and Environmental Education in Outdoor Sports (SEE) project is to develop, through the constitution of a solid European network and an increased sharing of competences, concrete instruments for environmental education through outdoor sports. The objective is to build a toolkit giving outdoor sports instructors the keys to learning about ecological issues.

To achieve this, the partners involved in the programme are seeking to meet on a regular basis throughout the three years of its funding. Two initial discussions had already been held in Serbia and Portugal, but the last meeting in this sense was organised from 7 to 11 March at the CREPS in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc.

Committed to environmental protection for several years – through its actions, its training offers or its partnership with the Management Syndicate of Ardèche canyon (SGGA) – and hosting the European Nature Sports Centre (CESN) – an active member of the SEE project -, the CREPS was indeed identified as the ideal organisation to host this new exchange.

Reflections during theoretical workshops

In order to move forward with the construction of this toolkit, the members of the CESN invited a certain number of national experts to speak about the environment and outdoor issues. Whether it be trainers from the CREPS, the teacher in charge of the caving sports section at the Vallon-Pont-d’Arc secondary school, the project manager at the National Resource Pole for Nature Sports (PRNSN), the educational leader, the director and the elected representative of the SGGA, the member of the Conservatory of Natural Spaces or the people in charge of the Bird Protection League, they all contributed their know-how and their knowledge in terms of environmental and sports education.

In addition to these local players, the floor was also given to international specialists: the members of Trash Free Trails, for example, made their contribution by presenting their programme to reduce single-use pollution on trails by encouraging citizen participation in “outdoor adventures”. The partners of sportNI and Leave no trace were able to share techniques for organising environmentally friendly bivouacs.

Complemented by workshops and working sessions between SEE project members – and other experts from international organisations such as Mourne Heritage TrustFrench Biodiversity AgencyMistra OutdoorsSport IrelandEOMTBVästernorrland Board and IPDJ – these interventions were then good ways to question how to create and implement effective common tools for sport and environmental education.

Time for sporting activities to put into practice the theoretical knowledge covered during the discussions

However, these theoretical exchanges would not have been so valuable if they had not been accompanied by practical activities in the field! In this context, the invited European partners and experts directly put their discussions into practice by participating in climbing and caving initiations in the heart of the National Nature Reserve of the Gorges de l’Ardèche. On this occasion, they discovered innovative educational tools, used daily by the local instructors accompanying them. Caving guide Eloïse Coutaz and climbing guide François Laupin led introductory sessions on their activities, learning technical sports skills while integrating environmental and heritage education.

As the meeting was placed under the sign of soft mobility, the whole of the displacements were operated with the assistance of electric bikes. The mountain bike ride to the bivouac in Gaud allowed the partners to discover the Ardèche landscape, its biodiversity, its geology and its human heritage through sport. The commitment of the CREPS instructors during this exchange also enabled the members of SEE to immerse themselves in real micro-adventures combining mountain biking, caving and a rapid crossing of the Ardèche in a kayak.

Different cultures, different approaches towards a common understanding

By alternating theory and practice, these three days of exchanges enabled us to compare different visions in order to educate as many people as possible to respect biodiversity. Each participant was able to propose, experiment or develop concrete situations to reduce the impact of our practices, make technical progress in the activity and “reconnect” with nature…

Times of exchange and conviviality strengthening discussions and cooperation between European partners

Finally, the various evenings organised – such as the welcome drink, the bivouac in /the Gaud natural area or the end-of-week meal held at the CREPS – encouraged the members of the programme to come back to the activities practised during the day and to continue their exchanges in a more informal manner. Also, these times of sharing were seen as good ways to strengthen, once again, the links between all the European partners: a considerable strength for the continuation of the project!

DON’T FORGET TO PARTICIPATE TO THE POW MOBILITY WEEK FROM MARCH 28TH TO APRIL 3RD

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/dont-forget-to-participate-to-the-pow-mobility-week-from-march-28th-to-april-3rd/

Fully focusing on transport and mobility in 2022, POW Europe recently launched a sustainable transport hub to start raising awareness and finding solutions on transport-related emissions from outdoor sports. So, from March 28th to April 3rd will be host the first ever POW Mobility week, engaging the outdoor community in one week of sustainable travel to bring down our footprints, raise awareness and sow the seed for cultural change.

POW: what is it?

By bringing together a community of outdoor sports enthusiasts, Protect Our Winters Europe (POW) seeks to use the passion of sportsmen and women to act in favour of the climate. Considering that the time spent in the outdoors brings sportspeople face to face with the realities of climate change, it is also appropriate to dedicate some of this time to the service of a fairer, low carbon society.

To this end, the organisation is doing everything it can to help enthusiasts take positive action for the planet: creating inspiring images, providing tools to promote low-carbon mobility, running campaigns to make the outdoor voice heard by politicians…

A week to promote low-carbon mobility in Europe

From March 28th to April 3rd, POW is organising its Mobility Week.  The objective ? To bring down emissions from transportation for outdoor sports to a maximum. Everybody is welcome to participate: there is no strict rules for participating partners, but rather want to see creative and diverse actions that somehow contribute to the overall objective of emissions reductions from sustainable transport. Currently, a variety of partners taking part, such as BurtonPicture Organic ClothingNideckerSpecializedRuka Ski ResortVirtaBründl…

The campaign principle

The campaign of this week is focusing on actions taken by private business to engage their employees and customers with internal actions, such as car-sharing, bike days, provision of free public transport tickets etc., and on actions taken by individuals, where they can win prizes and give-aways by sharing their sustainable travel stories on Social Media, track their sustainable movement through the app Active Giving, which is linked for fundraising for POW (still looking for donations to go into the pot!) and above all learn about sustainable travel and the emissions created by transport. Companies are invited to create their own teams in Active Giving to get their employees engaged and to take part… And the main prize of the week is a Specialized E-Bike!

As side actions, we will feature the mobility actions of participating partners during the week, host movie nights with athletes showcasing their films featuring sustainable travel and possibly host a round-table to discuss the political and technical aspects of transport and mobility to outdoor areas. Throughout the week we will have give-aways for best stories and most kilometers tracked with many of our partners participating.

“TOWARDS A GREEN AND SUSTAINABLE DEAL FOR SPORT”: REVIEW OF A SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE AT THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT IN STRASBOURG

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/towards-a-green-and-sustainable-deal-for-sport-review-of-a-successful-conference-at-the-european-parliament-in-strasbourg/

The conference “Towards a Green and Sustainable Deal for Sport”, organised by the French Ministry of Sport in the framework of the EUFP, was an opportunity to start discussions on the construction of a true European green deal for sport. All the guests present at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, whether they were institutional, NGO, Olympic committee or private sector representatives, sports or migration ministers, spoke in favour of this idea. Benjamin Billet, Secretary General of ENOS, also took the floor during the sixth round table of the day, contributing to the debate. Here is a detailed look at a conference that was full of learning and hope for cooperation.

OPENING SESSION – INTRODUCTION BY MINISTERS, MEMBERS OF EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND EUROPEAN COMMISSIONERS

Coming from the Czech Republic, Sweden and the European Commission, the ministers and commissioners invited to the conference announced their desire to cooperate by encouraging more partnerships within the sports sector.

Anders Ygeman, Swedish Minister for Integration and Migration, recalled that sport was one of the best ways to encourage mobility and increase interculturality, while the French Minister for Sport, Roxana Maracineanu, insisted on the need to recognise sport as a tool for education for sustainable development – taking up the results of the first meeting organised within the framework of the EUFP last February. Based on the latest GIEC report to underline the ecological urgency, she did not hesitate to consider sport as a cause, a victim but also a solution to climate change. It was in this context that she pleaded, like the other political figures present, for the implementation of a genuine European green deal for sport. In order to do this, it seemed necessary, during this conference, to define ambitious European perspectives, after having drawn up a precise inventory of the situation.

FIRST SESSION: THE TRANSVERSAL REGARDS ON SPORT AND ENVIRONMENT

1ST ROUND TABLE: THE IMPACT OF SPORT ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND BIODIVERSITY

In this sense, the first round table made it possible to clearly establish the link between sport and nature: it was agreed by all stakeholders that, although the sport sector is witnessing environmental degradation, it is also responsible for it. The representative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Tim Badman, echoed Yann Leymarie’s comments, pointing out that nature sports can be consumed in an unsustainable manner (carbon footprint to reach the practice sites, non-respect of natural environments, etc.). Referring to the quantity of plastic used to produce certain sports equipment or the degradation of the environment caused by over-frequentation of spots, the head of sport at Surfrider Foundation Europe (SFE) stressed the negative impact of sport on the environment.

However, their findings are not totally alarmist as they recognise the positive role that sport can play on the environment. After listening to teacher-researcher Karim Abu Omar – who pointed out that walking and cycling are an effective way of reducing urban air pollution – Yann Leymarie insisted on the power of environmental education through sport, which is increasingly recognised within European organisations. This connection between sport and nature needs to be further recognised and collaboration between states needs to be further engaged so that the sport sector engages in a profound cultural transformation and contributes to addressing the global ecological crisis.

2ND ROUND TABLE: THE CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

This second round table, which focused on the adaptation of sportsmen and women to climate change, revealed the impact of the ecological crisis on the practice of sport (rising temperatures, transformation of previously unspoilt nature sports sites, questions about the use of artificial snow, saturation of natural areas, etc.) as well as on the organisation of major international sporting events (postponement or cancellation of competitions due to fires, typhoons, etc.).

Directly influenced by climate change, the speakers agreed that it was the duty of the sports sector to adopt eco-responsible behaviours (and in particular, to be less dependent on fossil fuels).

SECOND SESSION: INSPIRING IDEAS AND INITIATIVES FOR A GREENER AND SUSTAINABLE SPORT

3RD ROUND TABLE: MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS

The sports sector’s duty to become more eco-responsible includes a new management of major international sporting events. These events represent numerous challenges in terms of carbon footprint linked to the mobility of athletes, spectators, service providers, suppliers, etc. What solutions can be adopted to reduce the impact of these competitions?

While the existence of low-carbon labels – such as the one created by the Ministry of Ecological Transition – was congratulated, Kevin Rolland, a high-level skier who spoke at this third round table, argued in favour of setting up minimum sustainable development standards for the organisation of each major sporting competition.

4TH ROUND TABLE: SPORTS EQUIPMENT AND ARTICLES

In addition to major international events, the sports sector is also responsible for a large proportion of emissions, due to its polluting industry. This was the context in which representatives from DecathlonTimberlandPicture Organic Clothing and the European Outdoor Group (EOG) met for the fourth round table of the conference.

The discussions were particularly interesting and brought out one main idea: we need to reinvent the way we produce, giving priority to quality over quantity and putting an end to the race for the lowest price. This should allow companies to focus on designing new types of products with a smaller ecological footprint, but also to set up a new type of economy giving the consumer the right to repair in order to avoid over-consumption and waste.

5TH ROUND TABLE: THE EVOLUTION OF SPORTS ACTIVITIES AND PRACTICES (TOURISM AND SPORT MOVEMENT)

On another scale, sports organisations at all levels can adapt to the climate crisis and push for more eco-responsibility in their field. Initiatives such as the CNOSF – the first Olympic committee to adopt an Agenda 21 including environmental measures – setting up a platform informing clubs on the steps to take in terms of ecology are, for example, a step in this direction. The underwater cleaners, who dive voluntarily into the Arcachon basin to collect waste, are also part of this approach. These are just some of the committed sportsmen and women who took part in the conference.

THIRD SESSION: WHAT PERSPECTIVES AT EUROPEAN LEVEL?

More than just the sport sector, it is also the role of policy makers to encourage change. Asking them to rely “on the strength of nature sports citizens and their environmental awareness” to drive change, Benjamin Billet, Secretary General of ENOS, delivered a strong message at the end of the conference. In order to meet the requirements of the Green Deal – i.e. to reduce CO2 emissions and give Europe the means to prepare itself to invest in research and innovation – he pleaded for public decision-makers to be inspired by the most interesting European initiatives, whatever the sector. In the field of sport, the SEE project was highlighted as a good example of cooperation and collaboration on a European scale for rapid and concrete action on the environment.

CONCLUSION MADE BY THE FRENCH MINISTER OF SPORTS

An appeal heard by the French Minister of Sport, Roxana Maracineanu, who explained at the end of the discussions that she had heard the appeal of the various stakeholders and citizens, and recognised the need to support, more widely, the development of public sports policies at the environmental level.

CALL FOR RESEARCH ABSTRACTS AND POSTERS: DISSEMINATE YOUR RESEARCH RESULTS AT EURO’MEET 2022

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/call-for-research-abstracts-and-posters-disseminate-your-research-results-at-euromeet-2022/

Held from 14 to 16 September 2022 under the central theme “Green Sports for a Greener and healthier Europe”, the sixth Outdoor Sports Euro’Meet conference aims to increase the interactivity of the event by highlighting the members of the ENOS network. Thus, in addition to the call for workshop proposals and call for nominees, the organisers are launching a call for research abstract and posters. The aim? To share knowledge by presenting the results of academic research or field examples related to the themes of the conference.

Euro’meet 2022: a knowledge-sharing objective around the theme “green sports for a greener and healthier Europe

As a meeting place for European outdoor sport stakeholders, the Euro’Meet is a unique opportunity to share knowledge on contemporary issues related to outdoor sport. If it is through participation in conferences, workshops or more informal discussions between participants, this dissemination of knowledge will also be encouraged by the presentation of posters during the event.
Indeed, Euro’Meet 2022 aims to be a real platform for the academic world to discuss recent research results and how they can be transferred to practitioners and external stakeholders: policy makers, private actors, civil society, representatives of national and regional authorities, nature sports associations, professionals, park managers, active tourism agencies…

Call for abstracts and posters: a good way to meet this objective

In this context, the organisers of Euro’meet 2022 invite you to submit abstracts and posters – either based on academic research results or highlighting examples from the field – that shed light on the conference themes. These posters will be displayed for three days at the heart of the conference venue and will be visible to the 300 people expected to attend Euro’meet 2022.
Also, while a session will be dedicated to the visit of the poster exhibition on the first day by the participants, the posters will also be accessible online, on the conference website, on the ENOS website and in the conference report.

How to submit a poster?

As with the call for workshops proposals and the call for nominees, this call for proposals involves a selection process. Thus, responding to this call – open to projects funded at all levels of the funding programme (regional, national, European, international) and to any type of project (individual and consortium) – implies creating a poster and an abstract on at least one of the conference themes.
The most relevant projects – submitted until 5 June 2022 – will then be selected and presented.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: HOST YOUR OWN WORKSHOP AT EURO’MEET 2022

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/call-for-applications-host-your-own-workshop-at-euromeet-2022/

As Euro’Meet seeks to become more and more innovative, this year’s event will continue to surprise you. In addition to the pre-conference Grand Tour and the awards ceremony for the most inspiring projects, the conference organisers are also offering you the opportunity to run workshops on the theme of “green sport for a greener and healthier Europe”. The call for proposals is open, so don’t hesitate to respond!

Euro’Meet 2022: giving a central place to the members of the network

“Developing green sport for a greener and healthier Europe” will be the central theme of the Euro’Meet 2022, organised from 12 to 16 September in Silkeborg (Denmark). By bringing together the members of the ENOS Network, this event will be an opportunity to encourage the sharing of their varied knowledge on a subject close to their hearts. In this context – and as mentioned at the launch meeting – workshops will be held in the margins of the main conference.

Encouraging knowledge sharing through the organisation of various workshops

Providing additional opportunities for discussion around ideas, projects or results of completed or ongoing research, the 20 workshops – of 45 minutes each – will indeed be an opportunity to explore current challenges and debate future directions for nature sports, in relation to the Euro’Meet 2022 topic. Theoretical or practical, they could focus on scientific research, specific programmes implemented by certain organisations, policy, education, or tools and examples of good practice on the ground, around the following topics:

  • Balancing Access, Activities and Protection
  • Be Active, Be Healthy, Be Outdoors
  • Welfare and the power of the outdoor

However, these workshops will not be organised by the Euro’Meet organising committee, but by you, the members of any organisation attending the conference! Indeed, this is the best way to share knowledge… And it’s easy if you want to lead one!

It’s up to you: send us your workshop proposals now!

While particular priority will be given to innovative and inspiring approaches for a wide audience, and to interactive formats that encourage the involvement of participants and foster intersectional collaboration, all proposals will be carefully considered.

To be eligible to host a workshop, please complete this form between 18 February and 31 March 2022. After judging the relevance of the proposal to the conference theme, the organising committee will announce the successful proposals on 10 April 2022. So be innovative, be motivated, and don’t delay in surprising us!

LET’S SEE YOUR VIDEOS! SHOW US YOUR BEST PROJECT AND WIN THE EURO’MEET AWARDS NEXT SEPTEMBER

https://www.outdoor-sports-network.eu/lets-see-your-videos-show-us-your-best-project-and-win-the-euromeet-awards-next-september/

The Euro’Meet 2022 is fast approaching! Organised from 12 to 16 September in Silkeborg around the theme “green sport for a greener and healthier Europe”, the event will be an opportunity to highlight the actions of ENOS members in this respect. A new feature will even be introduced to highlight them: the presentation of Awards to reward projects for the development of nature sports in accordance with the ENOS Charter… And you can already enter the race!

Valuing ENOS members, one of the central objectives of Euro’Meet 2022

Seeking to bring nature into culture through knowledge sharing and the power of outdoor activities, this year’s Euro’Meet will be built around a central theme: developing green sport for a greener and healthier Europe. If you have already discovered the numerous novelties they will offer during their launch meeting, other surprises will be reserved for ENOS members!

In order to highlight their actions, the Euro’Meet organisers have decided to present Awards during the September event to reward the nature sports development projects most in line with the ENOS vision.

The call for applications is open: compete for one of the ENOS Awards!

To all members of the network – and those planning to join this year – it is time to share with us the outstanding projects and initiatives you have recently carried out, demonstrating a clear commitment to the promotion of nature sports – at local, regional, national or European level. You can therefore apply for an award in three different categories

  • Green Activities for a Greener Europe: focusing on local places and spaces, this award aims to recognise inspiring and concrete projects that promote, through the creation of facilities and the education of individuals, the conservation of natural environments. Also encompassing issues related to global environmental challenges and the transition to a greener economy in light of the European New Green Deal, the award will recognise organisations that have used outdoor sports to protect biodiversity, while building good relationships with environmental organisations.
  • Being active, being healthy, being outdoors: more people-centred, this award is designed to promote initiatives that have taken into account the impact – health, social and psychological – of the pandemic on Europeans’ sporting participation levels. Recognising the health benefits of outdoor activities, the award will recognise projects that have contributed, through strong partnerships or innovative approaches, to the sustainable participation of the most vulnerable individuals in these activities.
  • Wellbeing and the power of the outdoors: this time focusing on policy, this category is a way to highlight urban or rural planning that develops nature sports, reduces social isolation and creates stronger and more resilient communities: examples of integrating outdoor education into school curricula, highlighting public policies carried out following the pandemic that, through the development of nature sports, pushes people to engage with their local environment…

How to apply and obtain the Award? Information and selection criteria

In order to get the award – given by the ENOS board members – you will have to fill in the application form, write an explanatory article and make a short video about the project you want to promote, before 31 May. We look forward to receiving your applications!

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeO55gega53M_p-qx7DGzCIgF6xERJPPI0nJMto3j-HDmKjng/viewform

Motivazione rispetto all'idea progettuale
