Il governo tedesco ha ripetutamente violato i diritti degli attivisti che si battono per la Palestina. Tra questi, il fondatore di DiEM25, Yanis Varoufakis, l’accademico Salman Abu Sitta, il chirurgo e rettore dell’Università di Glasgow, Ghassan Abu Sittah, e innumerevoli altri.
Yanis Varoufakis è un cittadino dell’Unione Europea e il pretesto addotto dal governo tedesco per vietargli l’ingresso – la “sicurezza nazionale” – non solo non è plausibile, ma è del tutto indifendibile.

Sono Yanis Varoufakis con un messaggio per te, poco prima delle elezioni del Parlamento europeo, in un’Europa (e in un mondo) che sembra aver perso il senno.
Ci sono momenti in cui ci troviamo esausti e scoraggiati, sull’orlo della disperazione. Assistere al genocidio dei palestinesi in tempo reale è stato scioccante e traumatico. La complicità dei nostri governi e il silenzio – se non la soppressione vera e propria – di chiunque denunci questo crimine sono stati esasperanti.
Nel frattempo i nostri stessi leader, ignari dell’accelerazione della catastrofe climatica, hanno trasformato l’UE in un’Unione di Guerra per volere dei trafficanti di armi statunitensi (e di alcuni europei). La nostra situazione può essere riassunta come segue: Mentre siamo di fronte a un evento di estinzione, invece di lavorare per invertire la marcia verso il disastro climatico, in nome della sicurezza investiamo per ucciderci a vicenda.
In mezzo a questa follia, solo persone come te Alessio possono riportare la speranza. Mi rivolgo a te perché fai parte di un numero crescente di persone che comprendono davvero la posta in gioco in Europa e nel mondo.
Siamo molti di più di quanto pensi, ma dobbiamo raggiungere la massa critica. Se ci impegniamo di più, se ci facciamo avanti in vista delle elezioni europee di giugno, possiamo eleggere persone che rappresentino i milioni di persone che credono che un cambiamento radicale non sia solo possibile, ma assolutamente necessario. Ma per riuscirci dobbiamo essere una forza coesa. Nessuno ci darà un sostegno finanziario per pagare i costi del nostro lavoro in questo crocevia cruciale, tranne te e me.
La scorsa settimana il nostro Collettivo di Coordinamento ha discusso ancora una volta delle finanze del nostro movimento. Dobbiamo pagare la spinta finale della nostra lotta elettorale in Germania, Italia, Grecia e Irlanda; inoltre, stiamo pianificando un grande evento paneuropeo ad Atene il mese prossimo. Dobbiamo inoltre collegare, mobilitare ed equipaggiare i nostri attivisti in tutta Europa. Il nostro compito è enorme. Ma le nostre risorse sono minime, perché chi ha soldi seri teme DiEM25 e chi sostiene DiEM25 ha pochi soldi.
DiEM25 è ciò che i DiEMers fanno di esso. Non siamo ricchi, ma siamo determinati e il nostro movimento sta crescendo. La tua donazione è fondamentale non solo perché DiEM25 conta su di te ma, soprattutto, perché condividi con noi la visione di un’Europa di pace, dignità e libertà.
Si dice che la notte sia sempre più buia prima dell’alba. In quel momento, come ora, è difficile immaginare i primi raggi di sole che arriveranno. In quei momenti ricordo chi, prima di noi, è riuscito a mantenere la speranza e a non arrendersi mai in condizioni ben peggiori delle nostre. A differenza di mio padre, io non ho dovuto sopportare le torture in un campo di concentramento per sinistrorsi negli anni ’40. A differenza di mio zio materno, non ho dovuto essere imprigionato all’inizio degli anni Settanta. Se loro hanno potuto alzarsi la mattina per continuare a lottare per la democrazia e la dignità, sicuramente possiamo farlo anche noi.

Questa fotografia è stata scattata nel momento più cupo dei travagliati anni ’70 in Grecia. Era passato cinque mesi dalla rivolta degli studenti e la giunta militare aveva reagito con forza. Quella stessa giunta sarebbe caduta tre mesi dopo. Dove c’è una volontà c’è un modo.
Con le forze reazionarie che dilagano in Europa e la minaccia di una guerra infinita che si profila all’orizzonte, sempre più persone si stanno interessando al nostro movimento. Presto potremmo diventare una massa critica di DiEMers in grado di fare la differenza in tutta Europa. Ma per farlo, il Collettivo di Coordinamento ha bisogno di pagare le spese di base che dobbiamo affrontare, settimanalmente e ad un ritmo crescente a causa delle molteplici elezioni in vari paesi. I’m Yanis Varoufakis with a message for you, just before the European Parliament elections, in a Europe (and a world) that seems to have lost its mind.
There are times when we find ourselves exhausted and discouraged, on the verge of despair. Witnessing the genocide of the Palestinians in real time was shocking and traumatic. The complicity of our governments and the silence – if not outright suppression – of anyone who reports this crime has been exasperating.
Meanwhile our own leaders, unaware of the accelerating climate catastrophe, have turned the EU into a War Union at the behest of US (and some European) arms dealers. Our situation can be summarized as follows: As we face an extinction event, instead of working to reverse the trend towards climate disaster, in the name of security we invest in killing each other.
In the midst of this madness, only people like you Alessio can bring back hope. I am addressing you because you are part of a growing number of people who truly understand what is at stake in Europe and around the world.
There are many more of us than you think, but we need to reach critical mass. If we try harder, if we step up to the European elections in June, we can elect people who represent the millions of people who believe that radical change is not only possible, but absolutely necessary. But to do this we must be a cohesive force. No one will give us financial support to pay the costs of our work at this crucial crossroads except you and me.
Last week our Coordination Collective once again discussed the finances of our movement. We have to pay the final push of our electoral struggle in Germany, Italy, Greece and Ireland; Furthermore, we are planning a large pan-European event in Athens next month. We must also connect, mobilize and equip our activists across Europe. Our task is enormous. But our resources are minimal, because those with serious money fear DiEM25 and those who support DiEM25 have little money.
DiEM25 is what DiEMers make of it. We are not rich, but we are determined and our movement is growing. Your donation is fundamental not only because DiEM25 counts on you but, above all, because you share with us the vision of a Europe of peace, dignity and freedom.
It is said that the night is always darkest before the dawn. At that moment, as now, it is difficult to imagine the first rays of sunshine that will arrive. In those moments I remember those who, before us, managed to maintain hope and never give up in conditions far worse than ours. Unlike my father, I did not have to endure torture in a concentration camp for leftists in the 1940s. Unlike my maternal uncle, I did not have to be imprisoned in the early seventies. If they could get up in the morning to continue fighting for democracy and dignity, surely we can do it too.

This photograph was taken in the darkest moment of the troubled 70s in Greece. Five months had passed since the student revolt and the military junta had reacted forcefully. That same council would fall three months later. Where there’s a will there’s a way.
With reactionary forces sweeping across Europe and the threat of endless war looming on the horizon, more and more people are becoming interested in our movement. Soon we could become a critical mass of DiEMers capable of making a difference across Europe. But to do so, the Coordination Collective needs to pay the basic expenses we face, weekly and at an increasing rate due to multiple elections in various countries. The long repression of pro-Palestinian voices in Germany reached a peak last Friday. German police shut down the Palestine Congress, a vital event to unite activists around a ceasefire for Gaza. They detained participants, including Jewish activists; they deported a Palestinian speaker. And then they banned our own Yanis Varoufakis, not only from making political speeches in Germany, but also from doing so over Zoom (!). These authoritarian moves make it clear: Germany is intent on silencing anyone who speaks out against its complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.
