Ma proprio grazie all’eccesiva umidità, in questi luoghi è davvero raro raggiungere valori estremi, o superare i +40°C.

AFRICA BEGINS TO BURN, THOUSANDS OF HEAT RECORDS SHARE FROM CAMEROON TO MAURITIUS
Last March 11th was one of the hottest days ever in Africa since meteorological records existed, with thousands of absolute heat records destroyed.
In this period of the year the sun begins to reach the “Zenith” (perpendicular solar rays on the horizon during the central hours of the day) close to equatorial Africa, determining the beginning of the hot season which takes hold in spring, between ‘Equatorial Africa and the vast semi-desert region of the Sahel.
The heat is already felt in the continental areas of sub-Saharan Africa, hit by the torrid and dusty winds of “Harmattan” (which is none other than the correspondent of the NE Aliseo wind over the Saharan area) set in motion by the existing baric gap between the dynamic Saharan anticyclone and the low thermal pressures linked to the “intertropical convergence front”, attested in the stretch of ocean just south of the Gulf of Guinea.
The presence of very dry air masses in the lower layers, combined with the intense daytime sunshine and the total serenity of the skies, is favoring a strong warming of the entire sub-Saharan belt.
Exceptionally warm temperatures for Africa
Last March 11th was one of the hottest days ever in Africa since meteorological records have existed, with thousands of absolute heat records destroyed. From Cameroon to Mauritius, unprecedented heat was experienced, marking historic highs for the current month.
The confirmation comes from Maximiliano Herrera, an independent climatologist and climate historian: «Records have been broken in almost every country in Africa, from north to south and from west to east. Nothing like this has ever happened anywhere in the world in the climate history of today.”
Suffice it to say that over a vast area of the black continent the temperature anomaly at 10 meters has reached values of well +15°C, compared to what the climatic average should be.
Cameroon was particularly affected, reaching +45.5°C
Cameroon, in equatorial Africa, was one of the countries most affected by this incredible heat wave. We know that near the equator the climate remains very hot and humid all year round. But thanks to the excessive humidity, in these places it is very rare to reach extreme values, or exceed +40°C.
Yet in recent days the city of Garoua recorded the temperature of +45.5°C, setting a new national record for the month of March. Navrongo, Ghana also reached +43.8°C. Niger saw its monthly records broken at almost all monitoring stations, with temperatures rising to +45°C at Tillabery, +44.5°C at Birni Konni, +44°C at Dosso and +43 .4 °C in Magaria.
Burkina Faso also recorded monthly highs in line with the rest of the nation. For example, in the capital Ouagadougou the maximum reached +44.1°C. The cities of Boromo and Fada Ngourma i +43.7 °C. Nearby, Mali recorded its hottest day in history in the capital Bougouni which reached +44°C. Records also broken in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Botswana.
The heat doesn’t even spare the archipelagos
Not just on land. The exceptional heat of these days is not even sparing the large African archipelagos, which, being in the middle of the ocean, under the constant blow of the Trade Winds, should have a decidedly more temperate climate.
However, in Mauritius temperatures reached record values for the month of March, with +35.1°C reached by the meteorological station on the island of Agelaga, while the Island of Ascension experienced its hottest night in history with a minimum temperature of +27.5 °C.
The phenomenon could be attributed to the very high temperatures of the surface waters of the tropical and sub-equatorial Atlantic, also induced by “El Niño”, which is waning in the Pacific area, but whose effects will continue to be felt in the rest of the globe, at least until end of next summer.
