ABRUZZO FIRST IN INCIDENCE OF COVID19 CASES AND FOURTH IN INCIDENCE OF FLU CASES IN ITALY!
30 DICEMBRE 2023 – 09:34:24
I positivi, intanto, tornano a superare i 10 mila.

Abruzzo is the region with the highest incidence of Covid cases, which is double the national average. This is what emerges from the weekly monitoring of the Higher Institute of Health (ISS) and the Ministry of Health of Rome.
The weekly incidence of diagnosed and reported Covid cases is decreasing in most regions and autonomous provinces compared to the previous week, the report continues. The highest incidence was reported in Abruzzo with 149 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, the lowest in Sicily with 3 cases/100 thousand inhabitants.
In the week from 23 to 29 December there were 1635 weekly cases in Abruzzo and there were 13 deaths, 43 in the month of December. The positives, meanwhile, are back to exceeding 10 thousand.
Finally, there were 223 hospital admissions with 6 people in intensive care.
The swabs recorded by the Local Health Authority were 762 molecular and 7,815 antigenic. The decline in incidence, they explain in the report, "could, in part, be attributable to a reduced frequency of diagnoses carried out during holidays."
Meanwhile, flu cases are also increasing in the region which, added to COVID19 cases, have led to long queues in pharmacies during the Christmas holidays and an increase in access to emergency rooms.

In cinque regioni l’incidenza è stata classificata come “molto alta”.

FLU WORSE THAN COVID19? WHAT THE LATEST DATA SAYS (AND THE MOST AFFECTED REGIONS)
THE REPORT ISS
A million Italians in bed. The incidence remains very high: 17.5 cases per thousand inhabitants. The infectious disease specialist: "In hospitals more serious cases of flu syndrome than of coronavirus".
There were more than one million cases of flu in Italy in the last week of 2023. This is stated in the latest RespiVirNet surveillance bulletin released today by the Higher Institute of Health. According to the report, the Italians in bed with flu syndromes between Christmas and New Year were 1,027,000 to be precise with an incidence of 17.5 cases per thousand assisted (compared to 17.7 in the previous week).
In the week between 25 and 31 December 2023, the ISS confirms that "the epidemic curve of flu-like syndromes shows an incidence value never reached in previous seasons". In five regions the incidence was classified as "very high". These are Campania (24.51), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (23.69), Umbria (22.93), Abruzzo (21.76), Tuscany (19.94). While Valle d'Aosta and Calabria have not activated RespiVirNet surveillance.
Since the beginning of the season, approximately 6,719,000 Italians have been affected. "It's underlined - explains the ISS - that various respiratory viruses and not just flu viruses contribute to this increase, although the circulation of the latter is on the rise". The incidence is "slightly increasing only in children under 5 years old - reports the bulletin - an age group in which it is equal to 48.7 cases per thousand assisted (47.5 in the previous week)", while it's stable the trend in adults and elderly people.
Among the samples that tested positive, 22% tested positive for Sars-CoV-2, 11% for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), 37% for influenza A, "while the remainder tested positive for other respiratory viruses".
“FLU VIRUSES NOW PREVALENT, PEAK IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT”
"The incidence of flu-like syndromes remains high, driven by the various viruses circulating in this period" comments Anna Teresa Palamara, who directs the Infectious Diseases department of the ISS. "The analysis of positive samples - explains Palamara - shows that flu viruses are now prevalent, even if a significant share of Sars-CoV-2 and respiratory syncytial virus remains, which causes bronchiolitis, especially in the youngest. Although it's impossible to predict exactly when the peak of cases will be reached, a sustained circulation can be envisaged also in the coming weeks, facilitated by the reopening of schools".
In addition to vaccination for fragile subjects, Palamara recommends "not taking antibiotics, which are useless in case of viral infections, unless advised by your doctor, and to go to the emergency room only if strictly necessary".
If the flu spreads, COVID19 shows some signs of surrender (this is not true, it's a fake news!). In the week between December 28th and January 3rd, cases decreased by 5.5% even though the number of deaths was quite high, 371 (+33%). The numbers come from the updated bulletin of the Ministry of Health released on Friday 5 January. Hospitalizations are also decreasing. The employment rate in the medical area as of January 3rd was 10.1% (-0.9) compared to the previous week, while the employment rate in intensive care was 2.8% (-0.4%).
FALCONE, (SIMIT): “IN HOSPITALS MORE SERIOUS CASES, BOTH FOR FLU AND FOR COVID19”
"The cases and hospitalizations are decreasing due to COVID19" Marco Falcone, secretary of the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (SIMIT), explains to Adnkronos, who also underlines how the data on deaths are "2-3 weeks late". These are "elderly and frail people affected by the disease in the period of maximum spread of the virus that we recorded 20 days ago" underlines the virologist. According to Falcone "the data demonstrate only one thing: that Covid is still associated with the risk of death for the at-risk categories. However, he underlines, "at the moment in hospitals we have more serious cases of flu than of Covid". From now on then, he concludes, "I expect a progressive decline in SarS-CoV2 infections, as there has been an important epidemic phase. Conversely, for the flu we have not yet reached the peak."
