A volcano in southwest Iceland erupted on Sunday, the country’s meteorological office said, making it the fifth eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula since 2021.
A coast guard helicopter has been sent to assess the situation and the exact location, the Civil Protection agency said.
The eruption began north of the fishing town of Grindavik but it was still not clear exactly where the lava was emerging from or in which direction it was flowing, said broadcaster RUV.
The last eruption on the peninsula started in the Svartsengi volcanic system on Dec. 18 following the complete evacuation of the town of Grindavik’s 4,000 inhabitants and the closing of the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, a popular tourist spot.
Grindavik was ultimately spared as the lava flowed in a different direction from the town.
Lying between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, two of the largest on the planet, Iceland is a seismic and volcanic hot spot as the two plates move in opposite directions.

Un vulcano nel sud-ovest dell’Islanda è eruttato domenica, ha detto l’ufficio meteorologico del paese, rendendola la quinta eruzione sulla penisola di Reykjanes dal 2021.

Nelle ultime ore è stato registrato il susseguirsi di piccoli terremoti; ma soprattutto si è aperta una crepa, che si sta rapidamente espandendo. La zona è la stessa dell’eruzione vulcanica dello scorso anno, non è chiaro quale direzione prenderà la lava. Tutto è cominciato in piena notte, intorno alle 03:00 orale: l’attività sismica ha subito una forte accelerazione durante la notte e i residenti di Grindavik sono stati evacuati. «Si è aperta una crepa su entrambi i lati delle difese che hanno iniziato a essere costruite a nord di Grindavi’k», ha scritto l’ufficio meteorologico nel suo bollettino.
Le immagini di sorveglianza mostrano grandi colate di lava arancione brillante nella notte. Si tratta della quinta eruzione vulcanica in Islanda in due anni, la precedente si è verificata la sera del 18 dicembre. Iceland’s president said the country is battling “tremendous forces of nature” after molten lava from a volcano in the island’s southwest consumed several houses in the evacuated town of Grindavik.
President Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson said in a televised address late on Sunday that “a daunting period of upheaval has begun on the Reykjanes Peninsula”, where a long-dormant volcanic system has awakened.
A volcano on the peninsula erupted for the second time in less than a month on Sunday morning. Authorities had ordered residents to leave the fishing town of Grindavik hours earlier as a swarm of small earthquakes indicated an imminent eruption.
Geophysicist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson said on Monday morning that the eruption had “decreased considerably” overnight, but that it was impossible to say when it would end.
Grindavik, a town of 3,800 people about 50km (30 miles) southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, was previously evacuated in November when the Svartsengi volcanic system awakened after almost 800 years.
Since then, emergency workers have been building defensive walls that have stopped much of the lava flow from the new eruption short of the town.
There have been no confirmed deaths as a result of the eruptions, but a workman is missing after reportedly falling into a crack opened by the volcano.
Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, averages one eruption every four to five years. The most disruptive in recent times was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed clouds of ash into the atmosphere and disrupted transatlantic air travel for months.
The latest eruption isn’t expected to release large amounts of ash into the air. Operations at Keflavik Airport are continuing as normal, said Gudjon Helgason, spokesman for airport operator Isavia.
