WHY FROSINONE IS ONE OF THE MOST POLLUTED CITIES IN ITALY
The widespread use of cars, limited public transport and its geographical conformation have led the Lazio city to exceed the legal limits on fine particles more than the Po Valley
by Angelo Mastrandrea
On Wednesday 28 February the air monitoring unit that the ARPA of Lazio(Regional Agency for Environmental Protection) installed along Viale Mazzini, in the center of Frosinone, detected 52 micrograms per cubic meter of PM10, the finest particles produced mainly by car exhaust and home heating. A second sensor, placed on the corner between via Puccini and via Verdi, in the lower part of the city, reported slightly less and this was enough to avoid yet another traffic block.
The maximum threshold established by Italian law is in fact 50 micrograms per cubic meter, five more than the 45 indicated by the World Health Organization, the WHO. When it is exceeded, mayors must take emergency measures to lower the concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere and avoid risks to the health of citizens, in particular elderly people, children and those suffering from respiratory diseases: these particles, in fact, are often composed of heavy metals, nitrites and sulphates, and when they are breathed in they can cause respiratory problems such as asthma or chronic bronchitis, cardiovascular diseases and tumors such as lung cancer.
According to a Legambiente report, in 2023 Frosinone was the Italian city that exceeded the limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of PM10 several times. The Frosinone Scalo air monitoring station found that the critical threshold was exceeded for 70 days, more or less one day a week, while a 2008 European directive and the 2010 law that implemented it establish that the limit must not be exceeded for more than 35 days per year. For the second time in the last ten years, Frosinone was more polluted by fine dust, as these particles are defined, than cities such as Milan, Naples, Rome and Turin, and the Po Valley, where in January the threshold of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air was exceeded for several days.
Most of the 44 thousand inhabitants of Frosinone live in Frosinone Scalo, which is the most important city in the historical region of Lazio called Ciociaria. Almost as many go there every day from neighboring towns to work. The junction where the control unit is located is one of the busiest points in the city. For this reason, many inhabitants believe that the pollution data are distorted and that in reality the rest of the city is not that polluted. Mayor Riccardo Mastrangeli, of Forza Italia, however, denies them. «Recently we have detected a high level of fine dust even in the upper part of the city, which generally has cleaner air than the lower part, where smog stagnates because it is located in a valley between the Lepini and Ernici mountains», he says.
The only days in which PM10 returned to below legal limits were those in which wind or rain reduced its concentration.
Mastrangeli, who is also a pharmacist, says that Frosinone is the first city in Lazio for the sale of inhaled cortisone drugs. Every morning Mastrangeli checks the levels of fine dust present in the air on an app, according to the data collected by the two control units, and on the basis of these decides on measures to quickly reduce the quantity. The continuous exceeding of the threshold considered dangerous for human health have forced him to decree on several occasions the blocking of traffic for the most polluting cars and have convinced the centre-right municipal council to plan some structural interventions to change city mobility and systems of heating.
Among the measures adopted are the purchase of electric buses, which will be paid for with funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) financed by the European Union, the creation of a network of exchange car parks where you can leave your car and taking public transport, and sending municipal technicians to houses and buildings to check and possibly replace old boilers with less polluting ones.
PM10 is called in this way because the particles of which it is composed, which can be liquid or solid, have a diameter equal to or no greater than 10 microns, i.e. 10 thousandths of a millimetre. It’s distinguished from PM2.5, which is made up of even finer dust, which if breathed penetrates deeper into the respiratory tract. The Ministry of Health explains that it can have “both a natural origin, such as the erosion of winds on rocks, volcanic eruptions and spontaneous combustion of woods and forests, and anthropic“, i.e. from car exhaust or home heating, including old wood-burning fireplaces. For this reason Mastrangeli also banned the use of fireplaces and wood stoves in homes that already have other heating systems and prohibited farmers from “the hateful habit” of burning brushwood in the open air(agricultural fires) “despite the fact that we have set up a collection service free.”
The local secretary of Legambiente Stefano Ceccarelli claims that to reduce the quantity of fine particles it’s necessary to radically change city mobility and lower the speed limits on the nearby motorway in the stretch where it crosses the province of Frosinone. The environmentalist association is appealing to a 2023 law, signed by the Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini, which garanted the Regions the power to impose the lowering of speed limits on motorways precisely to reduce pollution. «Every day about 50 thousand cars pass on the Rome-Naples route and to these must be added those of the tens of thousands of people who come to work in the city with their own cars», he explains. According to ISTAT data, in Frosinone there is the highest number of cars in Italy, 829 per 1,000 inhabitants.
«We need to convince citizens that many routes can also be done on foot and it is necessary to review the frequency and capillarity of public transport», says Marina Testa, coordinator of the Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation (FIAB) in Lazio. According to Ceccarelli, the «consolidated habit» of taking the car is often obligatory because «the chaotic urban layout of Frosinone», which is made up of hundreds of villas and buildings scattered in the countryside in the lower part, makes it almost impossible to use a means other than private. «Unfortunately, since the 1960s the city has been built in a disorderly manner and without any environmental sensitivity and now it’s not easy to remedy the damage done», says Testa. According to her, the measure of all this is the way in which an ancient Roman amphitheater was treated: in the mid-1960s it was discovered by bulldozers working to build a palace. Construction was interrupted but then resumed, and what remains is hidden under a building on Via Roma, one of Frosinone’s main streets.
The Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation (FIAB)is fighting against the reopening of the only road closed to traffic. It’s 450 meters long and connects the municipal villa to the road that leads to the nearby Lepini mountains, crossing a park and an abandoned ice rink: it was closed due to a small unsafe bridge that was never repaired. Testa defines it as “a small lung nestled between the buildings, one of the few places in the city where you can breathe”. Along the road you can see people walking, running or cycling, “because there are no other usable routes unless you escape through the fields”.
Local public transport buses are rarely used because they rarely arrive or pass through many areas of the city. To go from the train station to the Zeppieri skyscraper in the De Matthaeis district, which is the economic center of the lower city, would take no more than about ten minutes. A direct line to the historic center would have more or less the same travel times. But bus waiting times range from half an hour to an hour, and they also take tortuous routes to cover as much territory as possible with the few trips available.
The “inclined lift”, a sort of cable car with a 30-seater cabin that should lead to the upper part over a difference in height of 170 metres, has been broken for three years. The municipal council has contracted the works to upgrade it, while the new electric buses should connect it directly to the station. «To make local public transport attractive you have to move from the station to the historic center in ten minutes, which is why it’s necessary to double the inclined lift and insert it into a sustainable urban plan», Mayor Mastrangeli said in the city council. At the moment, however, the fastest way to go to the historic centre, where the Academy of Fine Arts and the Archaeological Museum are located, remains the car.

Skyrocketing smog, four days of car closures in the center of Frosinone
The bans applied after yet another violation of the limits of fine dust. Four days of traffic restrictions from today until Monday. And ecological Sunday also returns on the 25th
The smog shows no signs of abandoning the air of Frosinone. The detection stations of the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection have recorded a new violation of the limits of fine particles. For this reason, the mayor Riccardo Mastrangeli has signed a provision with which the circulation of the most polluting vehicles in the city center is once again limited. The stop started this morning February 23rd and will extend until the end of the 26th.
In Frosinone the control unit in via Puccini measured 61 micrograms per cubic meter of pm10 on Saturday, the limit is 50 microgammas. And while the rain returned to the city this morning after many days of absence gives rise to hope, the municipality of Frosinone intends to continue to promote virtuous behavior in favor of the ecosystem and to protect the health of the community. So on Sunday February 25th the second Ecological Sunday returns. In particular, the city will host a series of initiatives in the Via Aldo Moro area whose focus is on wellbeing and lifestyles. It will be possible to participate in demonstration lessons of pizzica, dance, hip hop and indoor rowing.

I risultati in sintesi

FROM CHIMNEYS TO PELLETS, POLLUTION INCREASES AND HEART, RESPIRATORY AND STROKE DISEASES ARE GROWING
According to a recent study, pellet stoves and fireplaces would increase health costs due to pollution.
This is approximately 84% of healthcare costs for the treatment of heart disease, respiratory disease and even stroke.
This was reported by a study that analyzed some air pollutants examined in the United Kingdom, but also in Italy, Poland, Spain and other European countries. The results are incredible.
Pellets and fireplaces: increase in health costs due to domestic pollution, a study
The reassuring warmth of a lit fireplace on a freezing winter day, perhaps when it’s snowing outside, is a dream that many people have. Difficult to do if you don’t have a space to create a fireplace.
The closest option is to install a pellet stove. On the one hand, this leads to savings on the fuel to be used, but on the other, it could be expensive due to the costs for the system and for the adaptation of the property. In reality, even installing a fireplace, in the absence of preparation, would be equally expensive.
It may seem incredible but pellets and fireplaces would also be the center of attention for another reason.
According to research, the use of these types of heating causes some acute or chronic respiratory and cardiac diseases. These, among other things, would weigh on the already not very rosy situation of the National Health System (NHS), but also on workers and companies.
The study carried out by CE Deft, an organization specialized in research and innovative solutions to environmental problems, for the European public health alliance (EPHA) examined some air pollutants (precisely 7) present in the United Kingdom. Other countries were also included in the research, 28 in total, including Italy, Spain and Poland.
The results would be worrying, especially for Italy. In fact, it would have found that at least 84% of Italian healthcare costs would be connected to pollution from domestic heating. Another incredible fact is that Italy, despite being a country that is not exactly “freezing”, spends more on the treatment of diseases linked to this type of pollution than the other European nations examined.
The results in summary
Therefore, Italy would consume more for pellets and fireplaces than the notoriously colder European countries. Specifically, Italy’s expenditure, especially for wood and pellets, is 4.7 billion out of the 29 billion total expenditure calculated among the 28 states examined. Poland, in second place, spends only 3.3 billion, spending mainly linked to coal.
Regarding domestic heating, the situation in homes is not improving also because it affects both heating and cooking. In these cases, the pollution comes from the use of fossil fuels or biomass, through unventilated stoves.
The conclusion of the research would lead to the use of alternative sources as a solution: photovoltaic panels or wind turbines. An optimal solution for both our health and our planet. Without forgetting the economic savings over a long period.

Pellets pollute almost 3 times more than oil and coal
American research calls into question the sustainable role of pellets with respect to air pollution caused by fossil fuels, also for the supply chain. The CNR expert: “Domestic biomass boilers produce more and more pollutants than diesel or methane boilers”.
Electricity and heating production systems, powered by woody biomass – wood, wood chips and pellets – are more polluting than those that burn traditional fossil fuels. American research conducted by scientists from the Institute for the Environment at the University of North Carolina and published in the scientific journal Renewable Energy provides alarming data in this regard: the quantity of polluting elements emitted is almost 3 times higher, 2.8 per l ‘exactly, compared to oil and coal. The study, therefore, questions the sustainable role of this type of energy production, which exceeds the level of air pollution caused by fossil fuels.
In the United States, this type of plant generates overall energy equal to 1.3% of national needs, contributing to a range of total emissions, between 3 and 17%; but according to researchers’ estimates, there would be 2.3 million Americans living within a 2 km radius of biomass plants, particularly exposed to the harmful health impacts generated by emissions. These are mostly the poorest segment of the American population, with difficulty accessing hospital care.
Yet in recent decades, modern bioenergy has been described “as a bridge fuel in the transition to sustainable energy sources. But burning biomass emits both substances dangerous to health, such as fine particulate matter, and those that influence global warming, including both greenhouse gases and black carbon”, we read in the scientific text which underlines how underestimated the negative impact of biomass plants has been.
“Generally, woody biomasses are considered to have zero CO2 impact compared to fossils, since the growth of plant species removes CO2 from the atmosphere. In reality, the cultivation, cutting and transport of biomasses produce CO2 – considers Ettore Guerriero of the Institute on air pollution by the Cnr -. Among fuels based on woody biomass, pellets are among the least polluting when considered at the time of combustion. In fact, being chopped, with low humidity and a low ash content compared to other woody biomasses , produces combustion with a low production of unburned materials and therefore particulates”.
But the study also examines a second factor: the industrial process of “pelletization”, i.e. the transformation of wood into pellets. “The production process is polluting because it requires several phases that consume energy and resources. The pellet is produced mainly from sawdust and compressed wood chips, but also from other plant residues. These materials must be collected, sorted, dried, shredded and pressed in small cylinders. Each phase requires the use of machinery, fuel, water and electricity, which generate emissions and waste”, adds Guerriero of the CNR.
“Furthermore, the pellets must be packaged in plastic bags or transported in silos, with further environmental impacts. The pellet production process is therefore very energy-intensive and produces more CO2 than the use of other woody biomass.” The American study, in fact, calculates that, in the United States, at least 55 pollutants have exceeded the concentration threshold allowed by state air quality agencies by two times.
But if this happens in America, in Europe and Italy what is the situation like? The EU with its 27 countries is in fact the global leader in the production of wood pellets, with a production of 20.6 million tonnes in 2022, followed by the United States with a production of 14.3 million tonnes. But at the same time, we Europeans are the largest consumers of pellets, with over 24 million tonnes consumed in 2022, out of a global total of 46 million tonnes, and we Italians, in particular, are in second place, after Germany, therefore the American study concerns us very closely and calls for reflection on the climate policies adopted not only in the United States, but also in Europe.
“In Italy, pellets are mainly used in small domestic and industrial heating systems, with a preference for bagged pellets. Only 15% of the domestic demand for pellets is satisfied by national production, while 85% is covered by imports, especially from Austria, Croatia, Germany and Slovenia”. At a regional level, in Italy, there are limitations on the use of obsolete, therefore more polluting, pellet systems, as domestic combustion in appliances that are no longer modern. “All types of biomass boilers have improved recently, reducing the production of unburned waste, especially particulates, by up to 80% compared to boilers produced before 2010” highlights Ettore Guerriero of the Cnr-IIA, who adds “nevertheless, the Domestic biomass boilers always produce more pollutants than diesel or methane boilers, especially in terms of particulate matter, volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide. Fortunately, they are often less polluting for nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. “

Buonasera a tutti e a tutte voi.
Pancia Gonfia e Respiro Difficile
la linfangite carcinomatosa (diffusa localizzazione metastatica alla rete linfatica addominale da parte di un tumore maligno);
la carcinosi peritoneale, cioè la diffusa presenza di metastasi, derivanti da un tumore maligno, localizzate al peritoneo, sottile foglietto di tessuto che riveste gli organi addominali;

tosse cronica,
respiro affannoso,
dolore toracico
difficoltà a deglutire.
Ecco i cibi contro gonfiore:
Frutta: banana, lamponi, mirtilli, fragole, kiwi, mandarini, arance, pompelmi, ananas, melone.
Verdura: sedano, carote, zucchine, peperoni, melanzane, lattuga, fagiolini, zucca, pomodori, asparagi.
Preferire carne e pesce magri, e uova.
Tra i cereali preferire: riso, farro, quinoa, mais, avena, grano saraceno, miglio.
Latticini: latte e yogurt vegetali, formaggi duri e stagionati.
2. Verdure a foglia verde
Facilmente digeribili, prevengono l’acidità di stomaco.
4. Zenzero
In piccole quantità aiutano a regolare il reflusso gastrico.

Good evening to each and every one of you. This evening we will go together to discover a very common and widespread pathology in many Italians which is directly connected to their emotional and organic state: we are talking about respiratory dyspnea due to gastroesophageal reflux, a particularly annoying symptom that tends to occur in particularly stressful emotional periods. and in combination with organic problems linked to slow gastric emptying or irritable bowel syndrome, which leads to the phenomenon of leaky intestine or "Leaky Gut". With the increase in the number of things to do during the day or due to our desire to always remain connected day and night to the computer so as not to have to deal with real people, I am talking about my specific personal case, but it certainly applies to many other people because I think I'm in good company from this point of view, you can end up completely isolating yourself from the real world and having the neurological and somatic sensation of no longer having control of your life due to all the changes in the aspects you experience in the environment around us and which are constantly questioned: the increasing solar magnetic activity with the expected peak in 2024, the unstable, crazy Earth climate which led to the manifestation on Earth of ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation ) and the climate changes we are witnessing that originate in response to solar activity through feedback or feedback mechanisms, in obedience to Newton's third law, better known as the Principle of Action and Reaction: "every action always corresponds to an equal and opposite reaction", the COVID19 pandemic, the undermined social conditions of young people and adults due to the pandemic itself, the disastrous personal situations of oneself or those of loved ones due to lack of employment or 'having an unrewarding occupation, which leads people to close themselves more and more indoors, to have a more sedentary lifestyle which does not allow correct emptying of the stomach (slowing down of gastric emptying) and/or of the intestine (constipation or constipation ), are all problems which, taken together, generate a condition of stress which in the medium and long term can lead to the manifestation of psychosomatic pathological conditions which certainly include respiratory dyspnoea due to gastroesophageal reflux, an increasingly increasing pathology. among Italians, as already reported here. I personally started to suffer from gastroesophageal reflux when I was still living in Avezzano, exactly in 2016, due to some major unfortunate personal events which then led me to suffer from this annoying symptom: the death of my maternal grandfather Carmine on the 30th January 2015, due to an encysted neoplasm in the liver, which then grew in volume and encysted between the liver and kidneys which then led to renal failure a few hours before dying at the Oncology Hospital of Pescina (AQ), the lack of contractualization in Impresa Verde Abruzzo Srl in December 2015, after the end of my internship as part of the unsuccessful Renzian project for the first job placement Guarantee Youth Abruzzo, a six-month training at the CAA of Coldiretti of Avezzano which my former leaders of Impresa Verde Abruzzo they did not want to transform it into an employment contract and then having noticed strange movements linked to the marketing of drugs, day and night, both in the building where I lived at the time and in the street in front of my bedroom window, the fact that I was no longer able to go to train regularly on a racing bicycle, as I did in Avezzano between 2008 and 2019, but since I came to live in Vasto I have had to stop cycling alone due to the ever-increasing number of cars and vehicles of all types also along not only the Strada Statale 16 Adriatica, which as far as I'm concerned is much busier than the Strada Statale 5 Tiburtina Valeria where I often trained and then I also report the significant worsening of my mother's working conditions, as soon as passed from the permanent contract in ASL 1 Abruzzo to the SS Filippo and Nicola civil hospital of Avezzano, to the contract on command in ASL 2 Abruzzo first at the Renzetti hospital in Lanciano and then at the local health district of Vasto, a contract that was remedied for an indefinite period only on 1 October 2023 thanks only to the direct intervention of me and my father on the issue, allowed my mother to have what was rightfully hers from the beginning, considering her professionalism and her long experience gained as an administrative assistant at the Avezzano hospital, initially as a precarious employee of the Single Booking Center (CUP) between 1997 and 2012 as a Socially Useful Worker (LSU) in the period between 1997 and 2003, then as a worker with the continuous collaboration contract (CO.CO.CO.) in the period between 2003 and 2005, then as a worker with the continuous project collaboration contract (CO.CO.PRO.) in the period between 2005 and 2012, then on a fixed-term contract for one year in Administrative Management in the period 2012-2013, then from September 2013 to March 2021 nine-year contract indefinitely, with a proven experience of 24 years in ASL 1 Abruzzo, she ended up in ASL 2 Abruzzo by her choice, but with a precarious contract again after having already been emotionally tested by a precarious job in ASL 1 Abruzzo which lasted for 15 years, this aspect did absolutely no good to his mind and even less to mine, no matter how strong we may be we are always human people, even too much so, we, me, my mother and my father and not everyone knows that between me and my mother there is a special relationship that sometimes goes beyond the simple mother-son relationship, the two of us when we are together are much more than a mother and a son: my mother is everything to me, she is also a confidant, a sister who I have never been able to have from life, so my current unstable emotional condition depends a lot on various aspects which, just as they didn't make me feel comfortable in Avezzano, don't make me feel comfortable here in Vasto either, but much of my current uncomfortable psychological condition also depends from the fact that she and my father wanted to come and live here in Vasto where I ended up, I certainly didn't ask them to do me this favor, given that I was in very bad conditions in Avezzano due to the precarious conditions of the house where I lived. I lived in rent for almost nine years, from June 2012 to March 2021, but I knew many people in the city, although I had the big limitation of not being socially rooted, however I had a good time on a sporting level, because I could train in an athletics facility as light as the Stadio dei Pini which does not exist here in Vasto, I repeat and insist, I didn't come here by my personal choice, I aim to clarify this aspect once and for all because I don't want to repeat it, so I think it's legitimate and understandable to still have a minimum of organic problems linked to the intense stress with which I had to deal with accounts both for having changed city, moving from Avezzano to Vasto on 16 March 2021, among other things in the midst of a serious COVID19 pandemic, and for the COVID19 itself that I caught in February 2022, no longer being able to train on a bicycle run that made me feel good and feel free because of all the sons of whores who test positive for the disease and who continue to do their own swabs at home so as not to want to communicate their positivity to the local local health authority of reference, this for me it is a petty, ignoble, incorrect and disrespectful way of behaving towards those like me and my father who have always been careful and continue to be careful so as not to get back this disease which as far as I am concerned is an artificial viral agent released from a of the twenty-six genetic laboratories built in Ukraine by the American Zionist military, so as far as I'm concerned, COVID19 is a product strictly linked to the Zionist dictatorship currently in force in the USA, Europe and the entire world and in such a world I have no absolute intention to live again, I prefer to stay at home and wait for the storm to pass, no matter how many years it lasts, but not knowing if people are positive or negative for COVID19, I continue to consider them all positive, exactly like in the two-year period 2020- 2021, I continue to remain at a sidereal distance from them and for me this is the most effective way to stay healthy and alive, avoiding any kind of reinfection, which as a still competitive athlete I absolutely cannot afford. Regardless of whether I have been vaccinated or not, it shouldn't matter, because in one or the other condition I would have behaved in exactly the same way! Let's go back to talking about the subject of this article: respiratory dyspnea from post-prandial gastroesophageal reflux, because I don't know about you, but for me personally it is temporary and always comes in the 30-40 minutes following lunch, as soon as the process starts of digestion, so I believe it depends both on the more or less stressful emotional conditions of the moment and on some eating habits tending to eat quickly which leads to the production of air in the digestive tract between the esophagus, stomach and intestine.

Breathing, Digestion and Abdominal Swelling: the Pneumologist opinion
by Dr. Enrico Ballor 2 August 2021
The dyspnea (respiratory discomfort) associated with situations of dilated belly and tense "meteoric" abdomen (the term "meteorism" indicates an abundant presence of intestinal gas).
Swollen belly and difficult breathing
“When my belly is swollen like a balloon, like a drum, especially after eating, I breathe badly”, said one of my patients, to express the fact that, due to difficult and slow digestion (dyspepsia), every time he ate, especially if the meal was large, his breathing became extremely heavy and labored. (This is not my specific case, because I don't in the slightest resemble the fat man shown in the photograph to give an idea of this particular condition of organic discomfort). There are many situations in which, due to an increase in the volume of the abdomen, whether it depends on an increased quantity of air present inside the intestine (intestinal lumen), or whether it represents the consequence of an ascites, i.e. a pathological presence of liquid inside the abdominal cavity (ascitic fluid), the breathing act is more difficult, generating dyspnea caused by the push exerted by the gas or liquids on the diaphragm, a flat muscle that separates the abdominal cavity from the thoracic one, mainly responsible for calm breathing in normal conditions (see also “Paralysis of the diaphragm and lesions of the phrenic nerve: the pulmonologist's point” and “Respiratory failure after surgery: the pulmonologist's point”).
Causes of Dyspnea from Abdominal Swelling
- Even just a banal intestinal "dysmicrobism", meaning with this term the qualitative-quantitative alteration of the normal bacterial population resident in the intestine, either as a consequence of an antibiotic therapy that has subverted the normal intestinal flora, or in case of infection intestinal microbial of food origin, can be responsible for increased gas formation (meteorism) resulting from fermentative or putrefactive pathological processes present in the intestine. The increased presence of these intestinal gases which distend the abdomen and which exert a sometimes considerable push on the diaphragm, determines a negative effect on the physiological diaphragmatic contractile activity, counteracting that regular function, in conditions of rest, on which the act depends respiratory. This unexpected increase in the muscular work of the diaphragm turns out to be responsible for greater difficulty in breathing, resulting in that particular type of dyspnea that depends on situations of distension of the abdomen ("swollen belly"). This is even more true for those subjects who, perhaps already overweight, or even obese (see the definition of the two different conditions based on BMI, in the article "COPD, respiratory failure and nutrition: advice from the pulmonologist"), already have greater breathing difficulty resulting from excessive body weight (see also “Asthma, COPD and obesity: the opinion of the pulmonologist” – “Asthma and overweight: the opinion of the pulmonologist” – “Sleep apnea, snoring and obesity: diet or CPAP?”). - The same negative dynamics on the activity of the diaphragm can be found in the case of irritable bowel syndrome and slow gastric emptying syndrome, which classically manifest themselves with post-prandial abdominal "bloating". In both of these pathological conditions, the phenomenon of "unfastening one's seatbelt after eating" is frequent, certainly not very elegant and not in line with the dictates of table etiquette, but which very well accounts for breathing better after meals, especially if abundant, provided that the abdomen is freed from the grip imposed by a belt that has suddenly become too tight. - Numerous conditions that involve ascites, i.e. the pathological presence of fluid in the abdomen, can also be responsible for greater difficulty in breathing resulting from the pressure exerted by the abdomen on the lungs present in the thoracic cavity. There are numerous causes of ascites, ranging from those secondary to cirrhotic conditions of the liver (liver cirrhosis) up to those denoting the presence of primary or secondary malignant tumors (metastases) of various organs (stomach, liver, ovary, etc.). In some cases the quantity of liquid that collects in the abdominal cavity can greatly exceed the volume of 10 – 15 litres, causing in this case considerable breathing difficulty, which can only be resolved with the drainage of the anomalous liquid collection through the abdominal wall (paracentesis abdominal).
Three different conditions of tumor disease, then, can contemplate the presence of an abundant presence of ascitic fluid in the abdomen, such as to make breathing extremely difficult:
- carcinomatous lymphangitis (diffuse metastatic localization to the abdominal lymphatic network by a malignant tumor);
- peritoneal carcinomatosis, i.e. the widespread presence of metastases deriving from a malignant tumor, localized in the peritoneum, a thin sheet of tissue that lines the abdominal organs;
- malignant mesothelioma of the peritoneum which, like malignant mesothelioma of the pleura, is related to contact with asbestos (see "Asbestosis").
The above dynamics must be taken into account when interpreting respiratory difficulty in a patient with an increased volume of the abdomen, before embarking on complex clinical tests which sometimes may not be essential to clarify the origin of the symptom. "dyspnea".

FIGHTING DYSPNEA DISTANCE FROM REFLUX: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, AND TREATMENTS
Understanding and overcoming breathing difficulty caused by gastroesophageal reflux
What is reflux dyspnea?
Reflux dyspnea is a medical condition that occurs when acidic stomach contents back up into the throat and lungs, causing difficulty breathing. This condition can be very uncomfortable and can interfere with daily activities.
What are the causes of reflux dyspnea?
Gastroesophageal reflux is the main cause of reflux dyspnea and occurs when the muscle at the end of the esophagus, called the cardias, does not work properly, allowing acid to move up from the stomach into the esophagus. This can irritate the throat and lungs, causing difficulty breathing.
What are the symptoms of reflux dyspnea?
Reflux dyspnea may be accompanied by other symptoms, such as:
- chronic cough,
- shortness of breath,
- chest pain
- difficulty swallowing.
In some cases, it can also cause sleep apnea, where breathing stops during sleep.
For this reason we created the IMMUNE SYSTEM DIET method. The method allows you to lose weight, alleviate gastrointestinal problems and restore correct blood values by choosing the right foods for your immune system.
We have written an eBook that deals in depth with the topic of gastro-esophageal reflux. You can download it for free by clicking on the button below.
For those who suffer from abdominal bloating and a swollen belly immediately after eating, it is best to follow a belly-deflating diet with foods with low fermentative power combined with an equally healthy and balanced lifestyle. Here are revealed 10 foods that deflate the stomach.
Swollen belly? 10 foods that flatten the stomach
In addition to a list of foods that deflate the belly and stomach, there are very specific rules that are good to make your own. Chewing slowly, taking the right amount of time to consume meals calmly, for example, is essential for aiding digestion and preventing annoying and unsightly swelling.
The good news for all those who suffer from abdominal bloating is that the foods that help deflate the belly are many and delicious. These are foods that are easy to find and digest, poor in substances that ferment easily in the intestine.
These foods, in fact, avoid the production of excess gases responsible for that unpleasant sensation of "fullness" and abdominal tension, often accompanied by stitches and cramps in the lower abdomen. Here are the anti-bloating foods:
Fruit: banana, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, kiwi, mandarins, oranges, grapefruits, pineapple, melon. Pineapple in particular contains an enzyme called bromelain, which can help digest proteins and reduce abdominal bloating.
Vegetables: celery, carrots, courgettes, peppers, aubergines, lettuce, green beans, pumpkin, tomatoes, asparagus. The latter are known for their diuretic properties, asparagus can help eliminate excess water from the body and reduce swelling.
Prefer lean meat and fish, and eggs.
Among the cereals, prefer: rice, spelt, quinoa, corn, oats, buckwheat, millet.
Dairy products: vegetable milk and yogurt, hard and mature cheeses. In particular, the probiotics present in yogurt can promote a healthy balance of intestinal flora and help reduce bloating.
Legumes: green light for soya. Soy is a low glycemic index food that provides plant protein in large quantities.
Dried fruit: walnuts and almonds but in moderation.
Foods that deflate the belly: good habits to follow
In addition to the diet and foods to eat to avoid the annoying problem of a swollen belly, there are rules to follow associated with a healthy lifestyle. Here are some:
Drink plenty of water during the day, preferably natural and fruit-flavoured or with the addition of draining supplements to dilute.
Eliminate carbonated drinks and alcohol, which dilate the walls of the stomach and limit beer, because the cereals contained in it ferment in the intestine and the air ingested with the foam favors the formation of excess gas.
Avoid smoking, chewing gum and drinking through a straw: this will reduce the ingestion of air.
Reduce consumption of foods high in salt, sugar, refined carbohydrates and fried foods. Opt for fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.
Eat smaller portions: Eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day instead of large meals. This can help avoid feelings of heaviness and bloating after meals.
Eat and chew long and slowly, taking small bites, so that the stomach and intestines do not have an excessive workload.
At least three hours should pass from the end of dinner to the time of going to sleep. In this way digestion can take its course, perhaps aided by a fennel or green anise herbal tea which has a deflating action.
Do regular exercise: Exercise can aid digestion and reduce bloating. Choose an activity you enjoy, such as walking, swimming or yoga, and try to do it regularly.
Reduce stress: Stress can affect digestion and cause bloating. Try to manage stress through techniques such as meditation, deep breathing or relaxation exercise.
Gastric reflux: 8 floods to avoid (and 7 to favor)
Gastroesophageal reflux is a pain that is felt in the chest and stomach as if it were a burning sensation, sometimes intense. It is caused by gastric juices rising up the esophagus. The symptoms are more intense when you go to bed but fortunately they can be mitigated by changing your diet, favoring certain foods and limiting others:
1. Apple cider vinegar
Regulates stomach acidity. Add a spoonful to a glass of water and drink it 5 minutes before eating.
2.Green leafy vegetables
Easily digestible, they prevent stomach acid.
3. Coconua milk
The potassium and hydrolytes contained within it hydrate the body. You should drink a little throughout the day and a glass before going to bed.
4.Ginger
In small quantities they help regulate gastric reflux. You should consume some, freshly cut, at least 2 times a day.
5. Almonds
Almonds calm the stomach and improve gut health.
6. Fermented vegetables
They contain lactobacillus which prevents heartburn.
7. Kefir
It naturally helps regulate intestinal acids, promotes digestion and relaxes the intestinal tract. Choose a kefir that has been fermented for at least 24 hours.
Now let's see what are the main foods to avoid.
TO AVOID - CITRUS JUICES
Rich in acid would only aggravate the situation.
TO AVOID- CHOCOLATE
Chocolate, also through the activity of serotonin, relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, thus allowing stomach acids to pass into the esophagus.
TO AVOID - Very spicy foods
Spices are among the most widespread and well-known causes of gastric reflux. In particular, avoid chilli pepper which, containing capsaicin, slows down digestion. This leads to food remaining in the stomach for longer, therefore a situation that increases the risk of developing acidity.
TO AVOID - Salt + salty foods
Eating salty foods increases the risk of developing reflux by 70%.
TO AVOID - ONION
Especially when raw, it should be avoided as it relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, thus allowing stomach acids to pass into the esophagus. Furthermore, onions are rich in fiber which can ferment, actually worsening the situation already compromised by reflux.
TO AVOID - ALCOHOLICS
Relax the esophageal sphincter by increasing stomach acidity.
TO AVOID - COFFEE
If you experience discomfort and reflux while drinking it, then don't drink it anymore. There is still discussion on the topic.
TO AVOID - Carbonated drinks
They are among the main causes of reflux, due to high acidity. Consider that they increase the risk of developing reflux by more than 66%.
