Sonoma State University, a public school in northern California, has said that it will not enter partnerships with Israeli universities, heeding a call from pro-Palestine student groups pushing to boycott Israeli companies and institutions amid the war in Gaza.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, comes after a recent wave of campus protests spread across the United States, with encampments and demonstrations cropping up at schools like Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

As part of their demands, student activists aimed to sever school ties with academic bodies and companies perceived as complicit in Israel’s war and decades-long occupation of the Palestinian territory.

In an email to students on Tuesday, Sonoma State’s president, Mike Lee, said the school had reached an agreement with the protesters, who set up an on-campus encampment three weeks ago.

Sonoma State would do more to disclose its contracts and seek “divestment strategies”, Lee wrote. It would also not pursue partnerships that are “sponsored by, or represent, the Israeli state academic and research institutions”.

In exchange for the concessions, student activists agreed to dismantle the cluster of tents on campus by Wednesday evening.

Many universities have responded to the demands of antiwar activists with police crackdowns on encampments. But those efforts have done little to dim calls for divestment, and campus activists have likened their efforts to historic student protests against the Vietnam War and apartheid South Africa.

Several pro-Palestine university encampments have disbanded after negotiations over divestment demands with administrators.

In late April, for instance, protesters took down their tents at Brown University in Rhode Island, after the Ivy League school’s board of governors agreed to consider divestment in a vote this October.

However, calls for divestment can be controversial in the US, where Israel enjoys strong political backing.

Israel receives $3.8bn in military aid from the US every year, and US lawmakers have, with the encouragement of pro-Israel groups, moved to penalise and even criminalise calls to boycott Israel.

In Texas, for instance, Republican Governor Greg Abbott responded to students’ divestment demands directly, saying earlier this month, “This will NEVER happen.” Under his leadership, the state passed a law that prohibits government entities from contracting with firms that boycott Israel.

Backlash to Sonoma State decision

Jewish groups and a handful of state politicians have likewise condemned Sonoma State’s decision, saying that it represents an attack on Israel and the Jewish community.

Some tied the university’s decision to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS), which seeks to pressure Israel into protecting Palestinian rights through nonviolent means. It also aims to draw attention to companies seen as complicit in rights abuses in the Palestinian territory.

BDS’s critics, however, consider the movement anti-Semitic for its targeting of Israeli companies and groups.

“Yesterday the President of Sonoma State University aligned the campus with BDS, a movement whose goal is the destruction of Israel, home to 7M Jews,” California state Senator Scott Wiener said in a social media post on Wednesday.

In another post, the Jewish Community Relations Council Bay Area said the decision by Sonoma State was in “clear violation” of California’s 2016 anti-BDS law. It called on the chancellor of the California State University system — of which Sonoma State is a member — to “rectify” the situation.

However, free speech advocacy groups say that anti-BDS laws suppress criticism of Israel and conflate scrutiny over Israel’s alleged human rights abuses with anti-Semitism.

Protecting students and free speech

The campus protests like the one at Sonoma State have fuelled debate over the distinction between criticism of Israel and anti-Jewish hate.

It also has raised concerns about how to protect free speech rights on campus, while addressing the discomfort some students have expressed towards the protests.

Student protesters have sought to shine a light on the plight facing Palestinian civilians, particularly since the start of Israel’s war in Gaza on October 7.

More than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military offensive in the intervening months, with approximately 1.5 million people internally displaced.

The war has also pushed parts of the Palestinian territory into a state of “full-blown famine“. United Nations experts have warned of a “risk of genocide” in the enclave.

But even before the start of the current war, rights groups like Amnesty International have concluded that Israel’s actions in the occupied Palestinian territory constitute the crime of apartheid.

Still, while the vast majority of pro-Palestine campus protests have been peaceful, fears of anti-Semitism at universities have been running high.

Shortly after the war began in October, for instance, a report emerged that a 24-year-old Jewish student had been assaulted with a stick at the Columbia University campus in New York.

Columbia University’s president, Nemat Shafik, was called before a congressional committee last month to answer questions about the alleged instances of anti-Semitism on her campus, though several US representatives questioned the narrow focus of the hearing.

“Anti-Semitism is not the only form of hatred rising in our schools,” Representative Teresa Leger Fernandez, a Democrat, told the committee.

“Islamophobia and hate crimes against LGBTQ students have also recently spiked. They’ve led to deaths by suicide, harassment. But this committee has not held a single hearing on these issues.”

Indeed, advocates say pro-Palestine protesters have also been subject to a spike in harassment since the war began. At UCLA, for instance, counter-protesters attacked an antiwar encampment, and observers later reported that campus police waited to intervene.

The episode led critics to question which students were being protected — and why.

The most powerful solar storm in more than 20 years has struck Earth’s atmosphere, triggering warnings over the potential disruption to power grids and satellite communications while also producing spectacular celestial light shows in some parts of the world.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which issued a rare solar storm warning, said the solar outburst reached Earth at about 16:00 GMT on Friday, hours sooner than anticipated.

The first of several coronal mass ejections (CMEs), described as the expulsions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun, was later upgraded by the NOAA to an “extreme” geomagnetic storm.

It was the first solar storm occurrence since the Halloween storms of October 2003, which caused blackouts in Sweden and damaged power infrastructure in South Africa.

More solar expulsions are expected in the coming days, and possibly into next week, according to the NOAA.

The United States agency alerted operators of power plants and spacecraft in orbit to take precautions.

Fluctuating magnetic fields associated with geomagnetic storms induce currents in long wires, including power lines, which can potentially cause blackouts. Long pipelines can also become electrified, leading to engineering problems.

Spacecraft are at risk from high doses of radiation, although the atmosphere prevents this from reaching Earth.

Following one particularly strong peak, the NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center said users of high-frequency radio signals “may experience temporary degradation or complete loss of signal on much of the sunlit side of Earth”.

Unlike solar flares, which travel at the speed of light and reach Earth in about eight minutes, CMEs travel at a steadier pace, with officials putting the current average at 800km (500 miles) per second.

They said that the CMEs emanated from a massive sunspot cluster that is 17 times wider than Earth.

Even pigeons and other species that have internal biological compasses could be affected. Pigeon handlers have noted a reduction in birds coming home during geomagnetic storms, according to US space agency NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The most powerful geomagnetic storm in recorded history, known as the Carrington Event after British astronomer Richard Carrington, occurred in September 1859.

‘Gift from space’

Social media lit up with people posting pictures of auroras from northern Europe and Australasia.

“We’ve just woken the kids to go watch the Northern Lights in the back garden! Clearly visible with the naked eye,” Iain Mansfield in Hertford, England, told the AFP news agency.

That sense of wonder was shared in Australia’s island state of Tasmania.

“Absolutely biblical skies in Tasmania at 4am this morning,” photographer Sean O’Riordan posted on X alongside a photo.

The storm could also produce northern lights as far south in the United States as Alabama and across northern California, according to the NOAA.

But it was hard to predict and experts stressed it would not be the dramatic curtains of colour normally associated with the Northern Lights, but more like splashes of greenish hues.

“That’s really the gift from space weather – the aurora,” Rob Steenburgh, a scientist with the Space Weather Prediction Center, told The Associated Press news agency.

Minelli, ‘Long Covid non è malattia immaginaria, vasculiti fenomeno chiave’

Roma, 14 Marzo (Adnkronos Salute) – Oggi chi porta gli effetti del Long Covid “non ha segni oggettivabili (tampone, esami radiologici) di un’infezione virale in corso o di una condizione infiammatoria (Pcr, Ves, D-Dimero), ma questo non vorrà dire affatto che quei pazienti, dopo un’infezione da Sars Cov-2, siano psichicamente tarati o abbiano somatizzato o siano malati immaginari. Di quei pazienti, diversi continueranno a manifestare sensazione generale di malessere, turbe cognitive, astenia e facile stancabilità, dolori articolari di varia intensità assimilabili a quella che più comunemente viene chiamata fibromialgia, discomfort intestinale. Ma sono le vasculiti ad essere un fenomeno cruciale”. Lo afferma all’Adnkronos Salute l’immunologo Mauro Minelli, responsabile per il Sud della Fondazione per la Medicina personalizzata (FMP), in occasione della Giornata Mondiale dedicata al Long Covid che si celebra domani.

“Fin dagli esordi della pandemia non abbiamo mai smesso di sottolineare, sul versante strettamente clinico, la valenza sistemica della malattia da nuovo coronavirus, dopo aver scartato a priori ogni ipotesi poggiata sul semplicistico sillogismo deduttivo che vorrebbe un virus respiratorio, quindi assunto attraverso le vie aeree, linearmente responsabile di una polmonite e basta. E proprio questa visione allargata del fenomeno Covid ha messo in evidenza alcuni aspetti clinici che hanno finito per rivelarsi di grande rilevanza epidemiologica e che sembrano più fortemente coinvolgere il distretto cardiovascolare”, aggiunge Minelli.

“Ma d’altro canto – osserva – che la storia della Covid-19 non fosse proprio linearmente banale ce l’avevano anche detto i cinesi, quelli di Wuhan e dintorni, che in uno studio pubblicato sul ‘Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases’ ci avevano parlato di una ‘tempesta citochinica’ caratterizzata da un aumento dei livelli ematici di diversi mediatori della cosiddetta immunoflogosi. Queste citochine, delle quali i medici di Wuhan raccontavano gli effetti, altro non sono se non veri e propri ‘segnali di comunicazione’ tra sistema immunitario e cellule e tessuti dell’organismo e, in alcuni casi, sono in grado di promuovere e mantenere importanti processi infiammatori a carico di diversi organi e apparati. Figura tra questi ultimi il sistema cardiovascolare con possibile diffuso coinvolgimento dei vasi sanguigni, da quelli polmonari a quelli cerebrali, cardiaci, renali e fino ai più periferici”.

Rome, March 14 (Adnkronos Health) – Today those who suffer from the effects of Long Covid “have no objective signs (swab, radiological tests) of an ongoing viral infection or an inflammatory condition (Pcr, ESR, D-Dimer), but this does not mean at all that those patients, after an infection with Sars Cov-2, are psychically impaired or have somatization or are imaginary illnesses. Of those patients, several will continue to demonstrate a general feeling of malaise, cognitive disorders, asthenia and easy tiredness, joint pain of varying intensity similar to what is more commonly called fibromyalgia, intestinal discomfort. But it’s the vasculitis that is a crucial phenomenon.” Immunologist Mauro Minelli, responsible for the South of the Foundation for Personalized Medicine (FMP), stated this to Adnkronos Salute on the occasion of the World Day dedicated to Long Covid which will be celebrated tomorrow.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic we have never stopped underlining, on a strictly clinical side, the systemic value of the new coronavirus disease, after having discarded a priori every hypothesis based on the simplistic deductive syllogism that would have a respiratory virus, therefore assumed through the aerial, linearly responsible for pneumonia and that’s it. And precisely this broadened vision of the Covid phenomenon has highlighted some clinical aspects which have ended up proving to be of great epidemiological relevance and which seem to more strongly involve the cardiovascular district”, adds Minelli.

“But on the other hand – he observes – the Chinese, those from Wuhan and surrounding areas, had also told us that the story of Covid-19 was not exactly linearly banal, in a study published in the ‘Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases ‘they told us about a ‘cytokine storm’ characterized by an increase in the blood levels of various mediators of the so-called immunophlogosis. These cytokines, whose effects the Wuhan doctors described, are nothing other than real ‘communication signals’ between the immune system and the cells and tissues of the organism and, in some cases, they are able to promote and maintain important inflammatory processes affecting various organs and systems. Il 15 Marzo 2024 i pazienti di tutto il mondo affetti da long Covid organizzano la seconda Giornata internazionale per la sensibilizzazione sulla patologia. Questa importante iniziativa è volta a tenere alta l’attenzione sui rischi di medio e lungo termine dell’infezione da SARS-CoV-2.

Il SARS-CoV-2 è un virus che continua a circolare a livello consistente su scala globale, con continue mutazioni e con conseguenze di alta mortalità e morbilità.

Molti pazienti affetti da long Covid, ancora dalla prima ondata del Febbraio-Marzo 2020, non sono mai guariti e non sono mai potuti tornare alla vita precedente, inclusa quella lavorativa. Inoltre, una percentuale significativa di persone continua a sviluppare la malattia, o a subire peggioramenti di questa patologia, a seguito delle reinfezioni.

E’ importante ricordare che il contributo dei pazienti della prima ondata pandemica è stato pionieristico per la sensibilizzazione, il riconoscimento e la ricerca sull’infezione da SARS-CoV-2, con il prolungamento del Covid-19 in una malattia cronica.

Cosa è il Long Covid? Il termine e il concetto nascono dall’unione dei pazienti colpiti dalla prima ondata pandemica. Il termine “long Covid” viene condiviso per la prima volta su Twitter nella primavera del 2020. In pochi mesi, la comunità internazionale dei pazienti riesce a portare la propria voce davanti all’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (OMS).

Il Long Covid viene riconosciuto formalmente dall’OMS il 21 Agosto 2020. La ricercatrice Marta Esperti, fondatrice nel Luglio 2020 del collettivo di sostegno italiano “Long Covid Italia”, e la ricercatrice Elisa Perego (PhD), che ha coniato il termine “Long Covid”, hanno rappresentato l’Italia a questo incontro chiave con l’OMS, e hanno guidato in Italia il riconoscimento del Long COVID con l’Istituto Superiore di Sanità ed il ministero della Salute, nell’ambito della prima giornata italiana dedicata alla sensibilizzazione sulla ricerca bio-medica sul Long Covid, avvenuta il 30 gennaio 2021, alla quale fa seguito una nota dell’Istituto Superiore di Sanità. Nel Luglio 2021, l’Istituto Superiore di Sanità diffonde un report sulla definizione e gestione del Long Covid nei pazienti adulti e pediatrici.

A partire dall’ottobre 2021 l’OMS comunicava una definizione ufficiale della patologia Long COVID sotto il nome di “post Covid-19 condition” o “condizione post Covid” tramite il metodo DELPHI che vede la partecipazione anche dei pazienti, tra cui per l’Italia, Marta Esperti.

Il Covid-19 è ormai tra le patologie più studiate nella storia della medicina. Ad oggi, 13 marzo 2024, una ricerca sul repository per pubblicazioni medico-scientifiche PubMed, sotto il termine *Covid, produce oltre 410.000 risultati. Tra queste, migliaia sono le pubblicazioni dedicate al Long Covid.

Il Covid-19, con il suo prolungamento nel long Covid, sono stati associati scientificamente a danno e disfunzione in molteplici organi e sistemi organici, dal sistema nervoso a quello cardiovascolare. Sono ben attestati disturbi della coagulazione con micro-coaguli diffusi, macro-embolie e micro-embolie, danni cardiaci e cardio-vascolari, fibrosi e danni multi-organo, conseguenze autoimmuni sistemiche, disfunzione prolungata del sistema immunitario, gravi eventi trombo-embolici ben oltre la fase acuta dell’infezione, patologie metaboliche come il diabete, danni a carico del sistema nervoso centrale e periferico, e patologie gastrointestinali, solo per citare alcune condizioni associate all’infezione da SARS-CoV-2.

Nell’ultimo anno le evidenze scientifiche a favore di una persistenza virale si sono avvalorate, aprendo piste per nuove terapie con anticorpi monoclonali ed antivirali. La patologia Long Covid può presentare un decorso non lineare, con fasi di aggravamento e miglioramento che si alternano, ma con possibile patologia sub-clinica o paucisintomatica.

Decine, se non centinaia di milioni di persone al mondo, soffrono o hanno sofferto di Long Covid. Le ricadute sulla vita personale dei pazienti e sull’economia sono severe. E’ dunque cruciale una presa in carico dei pazienti Long Covid da parte del sistema sanitario nazionale. Questo, anche per evitare ulteriori aggravamenti di condizioni, come le coagulopatie o le patologie endocrine, autoimmuni o cardiometaboliche, per cui possono esistere dei trattamenti clinici adeguati, già disponibili in attesa di una cura risolutiva. 

Auspichiamo un incentivo nel finanziamento della ricerca, in modo da incrementare ulteriormente le nostre conoscenze sulla malattia Long Covid e supportare lo sviluppo di una cura. Il riconoscimento, nei casi opportuni, della disabilità, di codici di esenzione ed altre forme di supporto per il Long Covid e le patologie ad esse associate, è urgente.

Inoltre la possibilità, nel mondo del lavoro, di legittimare la malattia, usufruire di flessibilità degli orari o accesso da remoto è fondamentale per assicurare una vita dignitosa ai malati, allo scopo di una partecipazione quanto più estesa possibile alla vita sociale e lavorativa.

On March 15, 2024, patients from all over the world suffering from long Covid will organize the second International Day for Awareness of the Pathology. This important initiative is aimed at keeping attention high on the medium and long-term risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

For the occasion, the most used hashtags on social media are: #LongCovidAwareness, #LongCovidAwarenessMonth and #LongCovidAwarenessDay. Numerous initiatives around the world to mobilize public opinion on the severity and persistence of the long Covid disease, with particular emphasis on the request for effective treatments by global advocacy.

SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that continues to circulate at a consistent level on a global scale, with continuous mutations and with high mortality and morbidity consequences.

Many patients suffering from long Covid, even from the first wave of February-March 2020, have never recovered and have never been able to return to their previous life, including working life. Furthermore, a significant percentage of people continue to develop the disease, or experience worsening of the disease, following reinfections.

It’s important to remember that the contribution of patients of the first pandemic wave was pioneering for awareness, recognition and research on SARS-CoV-2 infection, with the prolongation of Covid-19 into a chronic disease.

What is Long Covid? The term and concept arise from the union of patients affected by the first pandemic wave. The term “long Covid” was shared for the first time on Twitter in the spring of 2020. In a few months, the international patient community managed to bring its voice to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Long Covid was formally recognized by the WHO on 21 August 2020. The researcher Marta Esperti, founder of the Italian support collective “Long Covid Italia” in July 2020, and the researcher Elisa Perego (PhD), who coined the term “long Covid”, represented Italy at this key meeting with the WHO, and led the recognition of Long COVID in Italy with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the Ministry of Health, as part of the first Italian day dedicated to raising awareness on bio-medical research on long Covid, which took place on 30 January 2021, which was followed by a note from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. In July 2021, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità released a report on the definition and management of long Covid in adult and pediatric patients.

Starting from October 2021, the WHO communicated an official definition of the long COVID pathology under the name of “post Covid-19 condition” or “post Covid condition” through the DELPHI method which also sees the participation of patients, including for ‘Italy, Marta Esperti.

Covid-19 is now among the most studied pathologies in the history of medicine. Long Covid pathology can present a non-linear course, with alternating phases of aggravation and improvement, but with possible sub-clinical or paucisymptomatic pathology.

Tens, if not hundreds of millions of people in the world suffer or have suffered from Long Covid. The repercussions on patients’ personal lives and on the economy are severe. It is therefore crucial for the national healthcare system to take charge of Long Covid patients. This is also to avoid further worsening of conditions, such as coagulopathies or endocrine, autoimmune or cardiometabolic pathologies, for which there may be adequate clinical treatments, already available while awaiting a definitive cure.

We hope for an incentive to fund research, so as to further increase our knowledge of the Long Covid disease and support the development of a cure. The recognition, in appropriate cases, of disability, exemption codes and other forms of support for Long Covid and associated pathologies is urgent.

Furthermore, the possibility, in the world of work, to legitimize the illness, take advantage of flexible working hours or remote access is essential to ensure a dignified life for the sick, with the aim of participating as widely as possible in social and working life.

Lo dimostra uno studio sul Long Covid che ha coinvolto oltre 20 centri di ricerca, coordinato dal Consorzio International Translational Medical Education (ITME), che coinvolge l’Università Federico II di Napoli, l’Albert Einstein College di New York e il Cardiovascular Research Center di Ahalst (Belgio). Secondo la ricerca l’utilizzo di un cocktail di Arginina e Vitamina C è in grado di migliorare la percezione dei sintomi più comuni legati alla sindrome post-Covid nell’87% dei pazienti con disturbi gastrici e nell’80% dei pazienti con insonnia. Alla vigilia di quella che per moltissimi pazienti dovrebbe essere la Giornata internazionale sulla consapevolezza sul Long Covid, la ricerca offre dunque un approccio integrativo, sicuro ed efficace, per contrastare i più comuni sintomi della sindrome post-Covid.

Roma, martedì 14 marzo 2023 – A tre anni di distanza dalla scoperta del Long Covid, dagli Stati Uniti si è diffuso un movimento social che unisce migliaia di pazienti in tutto il mondo e che oggi chiedono alle Nazioni Unite di ufficializzare l’istituzione del Long Covid Awareness Day, Giornata internazionale della consapevolezza sul Long Covid, da celebrare il 15 marzo. L’obiettivo è quello di richiamare l’attenzione su questa “pandemia nella pandemia” che si stima riguardi globalmente ben 63 milioni di persone e che continua ad avere un impatto molto negativo sulla qualità della vita di un esercito di “ex-positivi”. I pazienti chiedono di non essere lasciati soli ad affrontare quella che ancora oggi è a tutti gli effetti una sindrome per molti aspetti misteriosa. Ma la scienza continua a lavorare alla ricerca di nuovi approcci per il Long Covid, contro il quale oggi non esistono terapie mirate.

E’ in questo contesto che si inserisce un nuovo studio multicentrico, pubblicato sulla rivista Pharmacological Research, che ha coinvolto 20 centri italiani, tra cui università ed ospedali, coordinato da un consorzio internazionale composto dall’Università Federico II di Napoli, l’Albert Einstein College of New York e il Cardiovascular Research Center di Ahalst (Belgio). Secondo questa ricerca il mix di Arginina e Vitamina C, dopo essersi rivelato efficace nel contrastare la perdita di forza muscolare nei pazienti post-Covid, ha dimostrato di migliorare in modo marcato anche altri sintomi legati al Long Covid, tra cui in particolare insonnia e disturbi gastrointestinali.

Lo studio

Nello studio sono stati coinvolti in totale 1.390 pazienti con Long Covid, intervistati in relazione ai sintomi manifestati e divisi in due gruppi:  un primo che ha ricevuto una combinazione multivitaminica (tra cui Vitamina B, B1, B2, B6 e acido folico) e un secondo che ha ricevuto il mix di Arginina e Vitamina C liposomiale. “Dopo 30 giorni abbiamo osservato che nell’87% dei pazienti a cui è stato dato il mix di Arginina e Vitamina C, i disturbi gastrici erano assenti contro il 64% dei pazienti che invece ha ricevuto il composto multivitaminico – spiega Gaetano Santulli, tra i principali autori dello studio e professore di Cardiologia dell’Albert Einstein College di New York -. Allo stesso modo per l’insonnia il disturbo è risultato assente nell’80% dei pazienti trattati con il cocktail Arginina + Vitamina C, contro il 40% dei pazienti che ha ricevuto l’altro composto a base di Vitamina B”.

“E’ ormai noto che il Long Covid determina disturbi neurologici, tra cui l’insonnia, e colpisce anche l’intestino con lo sviluppo di sintomi gastrointestinali persistenti, come nausea, diarrea e dolori addominali – spiega Bruno Trimarco, co-autore dello studio e professore emerito di Cardiologia all’Università Federico II di Napoli -. Tra i possibili meccanismi coinvolti vi è l’alterazione della barriera ematoencefalica costituita da cellule endoteliali che può comportare una disregolazione del sistema neurovegetativo. Questa disfunzione altera il ritmo sonno-veglia con sviluppo dell’insonnia e implicazioni anche a livello gastrico-metabolico con l’insorgenza di nausea e crampi addominali”.

 “L’arginina è un amminoacido essenziale che ha molteplici funzioni nella reattività endoteliale in risposta all’esigenza dei diversi tessuti. Di conseguenza, ripristinare i valori di Arginina porta a un miglioramento significativo dei sintomi associati alla sindrome post-infezione”, concludono gli esperti.

Rome, Tuesday 14 March 2023 – Three years after the discovery of Long Covid, a social movement has spread from the United States which unites thousands of patients around the world and who are today asking the United Nations to formalize the institution of Long Covid Awareness Day, International Long Covid Awareness Day, to be celebrated on March 15th. The objective is to draw attention to this “pandemic within the pandemic” which is estimated to affect 63 million people globally and which continues to have a very negative impact on the quality of life of an army of “ex-positives”. Patients ask not to be left alone to face what is still to all intents and purposes a mysterious syndrome in many respects. But science continues to work on finding new approaches for Long Covid, against which there are no targeted therapies today.

It’s in this context that a new multicenter study is inserted, published in the Journal Pharmacological Research, which involved 20 Italian centers, including universities and hospitals, coordinated by an international consortium composed of the Federico II University of Naples, the Albert Einstein College of New York and the Cardiovascular Research Center of Ahalst (Belgium). The study

A total of 1,390 patients with Long Covid were involved in the study, interviewed in relation to the symptoms experienced and divided into two groups:  a first who received a multivitamin combination (including Vitamin B, B1, B2, B6 and folic acid) and a second who received the mix of Arginine and liposomal Vitamin C. “After 30 days we observed that in 87% of the patients who were given the mix of Arginine and Vitamin C, gastric disorders were absent compared to 64% of the patients who instead received the multivitamin compound – explains Gaetano Santulli, among the main authors of the study and professor of Cardiology at Albert Einstein College in New York-. Una combinazione di vecchi farmaci antistaminici e antiulcera accende la speranza in coloro che soffrono della sindrome del Long Covid, una malattia multisistemica conseguenza dell’infezione da SARS-Cov-2. A dimostrarlo è uno studio multicentrico coordinato dal professor Carmine Gazzaruso, responsabile Centro di Ricerca Clinico (Ce.R.C.A.) dell’Istituto Clinico Beato Matteo di Vigevano (Gruppo San Donato) e professore di Endocrinologia dell’Università Statale di Milano, che indaga il ruolo dei mastociti, cellule del sangue, nella fisiopatologia del Long Covid e l’efficacia del trattamento con bloccanti dei recettori dell’istamina, che è una delle sostanze rilasciate dai mastociti.

Il Long Covid è una patologia, talvolta invalidante, che ad oggi non ha una terapia standard ed efficace e può presentare una grande varietà di sintomi: cardiovascolari, psicologici, neurologici, respiratori, gastrointestinali, dermatologici e muscoloscheletrici. Tra queste manifestazioni le più comuni sono tachicardia, palpitazioni, ipotensione posturale, affaticamento, deterioramento cognitivo, mancanza di respiro e tosse.

Il team dei ricercatori guidati dal professor Gazzaruso ha preso in esame quattro gruppi di sintomi caratteristici nel Long Covid: stanchezza e astenia, alterazione cardiaca, nebbia mentale e alterazione della memoria, disturbi gastrointestinali (dolore, meteorismo, gonfiore). È stato quindi selezionato un campione di 27 soggetti affetti da questa condizione, che presentavano però caratteristiche comuni: soffrire di Long Covid da oltre sei mesi, essersi sottoposti a diversi trattamenti – come ad esempio aver assunto multivitaminici, betabloccanti e aver affrontato percorsi riabilitativi – con risultati fallimentari.

“Inoltre i pazienti arruolati per il nostro trial non erano vaccinati contro il SARS-CoV-2, perché il vaccino potrebbe modificare i sintomi del Long Covid, non erano soggetti allergici e non avevano mai sofferto, prima della infezione da SARS-CoV-2, di uno dei sintomi presi in considerazione nello studio – afferma Gazzaruso, principal investigator del lavoro, pubblicato sulla rivista Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine -. La stanchezza, che accomunava tutto il campione preso in esame, doveva essere accompagnata, per la validità dello studio, da almeno uno degli altri sintomi. Nella media dei pazienti esaminati il dato è stato confermato, registrando, anzi, la presenza di tre sintomi, se non addirittura dell’intera sintomatologia”.

Studi precedenti, condotti a livello nazionale e internazionale, avevano evidenziato come nei pazienti con Long Covid vi fosse una maggiore attivazione dei mastociti rispetto al normale, reazione simile a quanto avviene nei soggetti allergici con i quali vi è, effettivamente, anche un’assonanza di sintomi. Nel paziente allergico si verifica una grande produzione di istamina e prostaglandine, sostanze liberate in eccesso dai mastociti, esattamente come rilevato anche nel campione dello studio. Si evince quindi che nei pazienti con Long Covid si scateni una reazione cronica infiammatoria sostenuta con un meccanismo tipico dell’allergia.

Questa evidenza ha generato nei ricercatori l’idea di inibire la reazione prodotta, bloccando due dei quattro recettori dell’istamina, detti H1 e H2, mediante l’impiego di due farmaci datati, ormai poco utilizzati nella pratica clinica quotidiana: un antistaminico (la fexofenadina) e un antiulcera (la famotidina), molto usato prima dell’avvento dell’omeprazolo. Nello specifico, l’antistaminico bloccava il recettore H1 dell’istamina, mentre il secondo inibiva il recettore H2.

Il campione è stato poi suddiviso in due gruppi: il primo, formato da 14 persone, ha ricevuto la terapia farmacologica combinata, mentre al secondo, il gruppo di controllo formato da 13 persone, non è stato somministrato nulla. I risultati sono stati promettenti: i sintomi del Long Covid sono scomparsi completamente nel 29% dei pazienti del primo gruppo, dopo soli 20 giorni di trattamento. In tutti gli altri pazienti trattati si è comunque rilevato un miglioramento significativo di ciascuno dei sintomi considerati. Nel gruppo di controllo, invece, non si sono registrate variazioni in merito allo stato di salute.

Lo studio è stato condotto grazie al contributo dell’Istituto Clinico Beato Matteo di Vigevano (Pavia), dell’Università Statale di Milano, dell’IRCCS MultiMedica di Sesto San Giovanni (Milano) e del Centro Medico Ticinello di Pavia.

“Questa scoperta permetterà alle persone affette da Long Covid, che presentano questo disturbo legato ai mastociti, di guarire o migliorare la propria condizione di salute, attraverso una terapia molto semplice e anche facilmente reperibile – afferma Gazzaruso –. La nostra intuizione è frutto anche del lavoro di tanti colleghi sparsi per il mondo che stanno cercando delle risposte e delle cure per tutti coloro che, a distanza di anni, vivono ancora le conseguenze, talvolta molto gravi e invalidanti, dell’infezione da Covid-19”.

The team of researchers led by Professor Gazzaruso examined four groups of characteristic symptoms in Long Covid: tiredness and asthenia, cardiac alteration, mental fog and memory alteration, gastrointestinal disorders (pain, meteorism, swelling). A sample of 27 subjects affected by this condition was therefore selected, who however had common characteristics: suffering from Long Covid for over six months, having undergone various treatments – such as having taken multivitamins, beta blockers and having undergone rehabilitation programs – with unsuccessful results.

“Furthermore, the patients enrolled in our trial were not vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, because the vaccine could modify the symptoms of Long Covid, they were not allergic subjects and had never suffered, before the SARS-CoV-2 infection , of one of the symptoms taken into consideration in the study – says Gazzaruso, principal investigator of the work, published in the journal Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine -. Fatigue, which was common to the entire sample examined, had to be accompanied, for the study to be valid, by at least one of the other symptoms. In the average of the patients examined the data was confirmed, recording, indeed, the presence of three symptoms, if not even the entire symptomatology”.

Previous studies, conducted at a national and international level, had highlighted how in patients with Long Covid there was a greater activation of mast cells compared to normal, a reaction similar to what happens in allergic subjects with whom there is, effectively, also an assonance of symptoms. In the allergic patient, there is a large production of histamine and prostaglandins, substances released in excess by the mast cells, exactly as also found in the study sample. It is therefore clear that in patients with Long Covid a sustained chronic inflammatory reaction is triggered with a typical mechanism of allergy.

This evidence generated in researchers the idea of ​​inhibiting the reaction produced, blocking two of the four histamine receptors, called H1 and H2, through the use of two dated drugs, now little used in daily clinical practice: an antihistamine (the fexofenadine) and an antiulcer (famotidine), widely used before the advent of omeprazole. Specifically, the antihistamine blocked the histamine H1 receptor, while the second inhibited the H2 receptor.

The sample was then divided into two groups: the first, made up of 14 people, received the combined drug therapy, while the second, the control group made up of 13 people, was administered nothing. The results were promising: the symptoms of Long Covid disappeared completely in 29% of patients in the first group, after just 20 days of treatment. However, in all the other patients treated, a significant improvement was detected in each of the symptoms considered. In the control group, however, there were no changes in health status.

The study was conducted thanks to the contribution of the Beato Matteo Clinical Institute of Vigevano (Pavia), the State University of Milan, the IRCCS MultiMedica of Sesto San Giovanni (Milan) and the Ticinello Medical Center of Pavia.

“This discovery will allow people suffering from Long Covid, who have this disorder linked to mast cells, to heal or improve their health condition, through a very simple and easily available therapy – says Gazzaruso -. Our intuition is also the result of the work of many colleagues around the world who are looking for answers and treatments for all those who, years later, are still experiencing the consequences, sometimes very serious and disabling, of the Covid19 infection.”

China has told the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that the Palestinians “must not be denied” justice at a hearing on the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

“Justice has been long delayed, but it must not be denied,” China’s Foreign Ministry’s legal adviser Ma Xinmin told the court in The Hague in the Netherlands on Thursday.

“Fifty-seven years have passed since Israel began its occupation of the OPT (Occupied Palestinian Territories). The unlawful nature of the occupation and sovereignty over the occupied territories remain unchanged,” he said.

Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen, reporting from The Hague, said China used its time at the ICJ to counter the United States’ argument on Wednesday that Israel should not be ordered to unconditionally withdraw from the occupied territories without security guarantees.

“The US said the United Nations and the ICJ should stay out of a bilateral issue between Israel and Palestine. According to China, it was definitely a matter for the UN to talk about the self-determination of the Palestinian people,” Vaessen said.

“The Chinese representative said Israel is a foreign nation occupying Palestine, so the right to self-defence lies more with the Palestinians than with the Israelis.”

On Thursday, representatives from the Republic of Ireland, Japan, and Jordan also presented their arguments at the ICJ.

Ireland said it concluded that “Israel has committed serious breaches of a number of peremptory norms of general international law”.

The Irish representative added that Israel had also breached the basic rules of international humanitarian law.

The legal adviser for Japan’s Foreign Ministry, Tomohiro Mikanagi, also told the ICJ that his country believes a “two-state solution where Israel and the future independent Palestinian state live side by side in peace and dignity remains the only viable path for both peoples”.

For Jordan, Michael Wood said that “the only way for the [Palestinian] right to self-determination to be exercised is for the [Israeli] occupation to come to an end”.

Al Jazeera’s Hamdah Salhut, reporting from occupied east Jerusalem, said Jordan holds a “key position” at the ICJ hearing as it is one of the most prominent critics of the occupation and is also the custodian of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.

“While they have been not only critics of the occupation, they’ve been critics of Israel’s war on Gaza, so their role within the region is quite crucial for aiding the Palestinians in any sort of conversations,” she said.

The ICJ is hearing from about 50 countries on their opinion about the occupation and is part of a push by Palestinians to get international legal institutions to examine Israeli policy.

On Monday, Palestinian representatives asked the judges to declare Israel’s occupation of their territory illegal and said its opinion could help reach a two-state solution.

In the occupied West Bank, tensions between illegal settlers and Palestinians intensified significantly due to Israel’s war on Gaza.

On October 7, a Hamas attack killed 1,139 Israelis, according to Al Jazeera’s tally of Israeli figures. In response, Israel’s deadly offensive on Gaza has killed about 29,000 Palestinians.

Israel, which is not participating in the hearings, said in written comments that the court’s involvement could harm achieving a negotiated settlement.

Tra gli oltre 27mila morti nella Striscia, di cui quasi la metà bambini e minorenni, c’è infatti questa bambina di 6 anni. Hind è stato trovata morta questa mattina a Gaza City, dopo due settimane in cui era scomparsa nel nulla.

L’attacco dei carri armati

Il suo corpo era vicino all’auto della famiglia, che stava cercando di scappare dalla città. Nella macchina, rinvenuta nei pressi di una stazione di servizio nel quartiere di Tel al-Hawa dopo che i carri armati israeliani si sono ritirati dalla zona, c’erano anche i cadaveri di due zii e tre cugini.

La piccola Hind Rajab e gli altri membri della famiglia stavano attraversando Gaza City per dirigersi all’ospedale Ahli quando hanno incontrato sulla strada dei carri armati.

L’ultima telefonata di Hind

The body of a six-year-old Palestinian girl, missing for 12 days after an Israeli tank targeted their family car in Gaza, has been found along with the bodies of two medics dispatched to look for them.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and the family of the girl, Hind Rajab, confirmed on Saturday that all seven people inside the car were killed, with the Palestinian relief organisation saying it lost crew members Yusuf Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun in the Israeli attack on civilians in Gaza City.

Family members found Hind’s body along with those of her uncle and aunt and their three children near a roundabout in the city’s Tal al-Hawa suburb, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

Another of Hind’s uncles, Sameeh Hamadeh, said the car was peppered with bullet holes.

“The occupation deliberately targeted the ambulance upon its arrival at the scene, where it was found just metres away from the vehicle containing the trapped child Hind,” said the PRCS statement.

“Despite prior coordination to allow the ambulance to reach the location to rescue the child, Hind, the occupation deliberately targeted the Palestine Red Crescent ambulance crew.”

Earlier this month, the PRCS published an audio file in which Hind could be heard pleading on the phone with a member of the rescue team. All members of her family are believed to have been killed before her, leaving her terrified in the car with the dead bodies of her loved ones.

“I’m so scared, please come. Please call someone to come and take me,” she was heard crying desperately in the call that PRCS said lasted three hours in an effort to calm the frightened child.

The Israeli army had earlier said it was not aware of the incident.

The PRCS had started a count of the number of hours since it lost contact with Hind and the crew in trying to attract attention to the plight of Palestinian healthcare workers, who persist under constant attacks by the Israeli army.

In an interview with Al Jazeera Arabic shortly after the family was targeted, Hind’s mother said she had managed to speak to her and an older cousin, 15-year-old Layan Hamadeh, who was with Hind in the car.

“They are shooting at us. The tank is next to us,” Layan said in a recording released at the time.

Then a barrage of shooting was heard, followed by screams, before the line cut out.

The plight of Hind, revealed in the harrowing audio clips, underlined the impossible conditions for civilians in the face of Israel’s four-month assault on Gaza, which many governments have termed a “genocide”.

Israel’s military has killed nearly 28,000 people – mostly women and children – since October 7 when Hamas fighters attacked Israel, killing more than 1,100 people and taking 253 captives, according to Israeli tallies.

Al Jazeera: What does the success of the Palestinian team mean to the people in Gaza?

Jibril Rajoub: We, the Palestinian football family, believe that the sport can be a good tool to expose the suffering of the Palestinian people and to highlight their determination and commitment to achieving their goals.

The team’s success amid such a terrible situation – while people are being buried in their thousands amid the destruction, the atrocities, the genocide – is motivating our players to achieve something for their people.

The qualification in Asian Cup knockouts is a great achievement. It’s a good message to our people – it gives them hope.

Al Jazeera: How difficult has it been for the team to assemble and train for the Asian Cup?

Rajoub: It’s not easy. We have many players in Gaza who could not join the national football team and other teams.

But we should not and we will not give up.

In the West Bank, they are trying to suffocate everybody. They want everybody to leave, but we are there and we will remain there.

Despite the political and geographical split in Palestine [between Gaza and Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory], we are united.

The football team is the only one that is functioning at the moment, so we are trying to keep all the players outside Palestine in order to continue our 2026 World Cup qualification and participation in other events such as this tournament.

We have some friendly games lined up. We will travel to South Africa to meet the disciples of [Nelson] Mandela – their national team – on the anniversary of Mandela’s release on February 11.

We have no choice except not giving up.

We will not leave our country. We will not leave our homes.

Al Jazeera: Do you think FIFA can do more to help Palestinian footballers?

Rajoub: [There’s a] a double-standard policy. FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should follow one standard and one policy.

The Israeli Football Association is organising official league games in the occupied territories of the State of Palestine, which is a clear violation of the statutes of FIFA and the Olympic Charter.

Secondly, I never hear any sport organisation in Israel criticising their government’s attacks, destruction and killing of [Palestinian] players.

We will keep pushing the IOC and FIFA to follow their principles.

I hope the international community, whether it’s sport or civil societies, will understand that it’s the time to raise a red card [for Israel].

The Israelis have no right to deny others the same rights that they enjoy.

Al Jazeera: Has the war in Gaza affected the concentration and focus of the players?

Rajoub: Definitely. It is a preoccupation for them. Imagine a player, his relatives, his family, his neighbours, his colleagues [in Gaza]. It’s a tragedy. But surrendering is not and should not be part of our plan.

We should not give up. We are all affected [by the war] psychologically and physically, but we have to continue our struggle.

Al Jazeera: What does the future hold for the Palestinian team and players who will have to return home amid the war?

Rajoub: We are the Palestinian people. We have been facing the same fate, the same destiny, the same situation.

We go home, we meet our families, and we again try to go somewhere to play because sport is part of our resistance. Sport is part of our national duty to our people.

Al Jazeera: Palestine play Qatar, the hosts and defending champions, in the round of 16. Are you worried about the game?

Rajoub: We are the strongest team in the world. Our determination and patience empower and motivate our players.

Two climate activists have thrown soup at the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum in Paris and shouted slogans advocating for a sustainable food system amid farmers’ protests demanding the government address low wages and other problems.

The 16th-century painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci was not damaged.

In a video posted on social media, two women with the words ‘Riposte Alimentaire’ (food response) written on their T-shirts can be seen throwing soup at the glass protecting one of the world’s most famous paintings and passing under a security barrier to get closer to the painting.

“What’s the most important thing?” they shouted. “Art, or right to a healthy and sustainable food?”

“Our farming system is sick. Our farmers are dying at work,” the added.

The Louvre employees could then be seen putting black panels in front of the Mona Lisa and asking visitors to evacuate the room.

‘Civil resistance’

On its website, the “Food Riposte” group said the French government is breaking its climate commitments and called for the equivalent of France’s state-sponsored healthcare system to be put in place to give people better access to healthy food while providing farmers with a decent income.

In a statement sent to the AFP news agency, they said the soup throwing marked the “start of a campaign of civil resistance with the clear demand… of the social security of sustainable food”.

Angry French farmers have been using their tractors for days to set up road blockades and slow traffic across France to seek better remuneration for their produce, less red tape and protection against cheap imports.

On Friday, the government announced a series of measures they said do not fully address their demands. Some farmers threatened to converge on Paris, starting Monday, to block the main roads leading to the capital.

Occupied West Bank – As Israel’s war on Gaza grinds on, violence is spiking in the occupied West Bank as Israeli forces step up their raids on Palestinian towns and refugee camps and settlers increase their attacks and harassment of Palestinians.

The cost in human lives ruined has been immense, with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs saying Israeli forces killed 30 Palestinians, including seven children, in the West Bank in the first 15 days of the year.

Thousands of people have been arrested and taken into Israeli detention, many held under the “administrative detention” system, which Israeli authorities use to hold Palestinians indefinitely with no charge.

As fear and tensions rise, Al Jazeera spoke to a number of people across the West Bank about what they have been through, how the situation is affecting them and what are their thoughts on living under occupation.

“I was born and raised in Jenin. I remember I was a kid, nearly six years old, at the time of the second Intifada in the year 2000.

“Me, my mom and our neighbours were praying because there was a lot of shooting, destruction and fear. I remember when the jeeps came. A soldier opened the back door of a jeep, and I started screaming. It was the first time I’d seen something like that.

“My mom grabbed me to take me inside. I told her: ‘I’m sorry for peeing myself and being weak.’

“What’s happening to the kids in Gaza takes me back to that. Escaping from Jenin to Nablus, studying, graduating, coming to Ramallah to practice law, moving to the US to do my master’s. It’s all tied to that.

“It’s funny … when I arrived in the US, I was scared of the cops. Every time I saw a cop, I felt like I had done something wrong. I think this is trauma from the checkpoints.

“Leaving home, you have to pray first … all the time, whether you’re in a cab or with your friends … because you don’t know if you’ll be next. Everything brings me back to what happened or is still happening because it never stopped.

“I chose to fight by studying law. Anything you do here, any action, is resistance. I’m scared, but every step of the way, you think about [your family]. Every day, going from Ramallah to Jenin to visit them, I saw settlements, checkpoints, settlers, the soldiers waiting, pointing guns in your face.

“You wonder: ‘Why am I still here?’ And when you see a person, a soul, was killed, you’re like: ‘I wish it was me.’

“That’s how I feel about the Gazan people. I wish I could do something, but because I can’t, I feel guilty that I’m alive, … guilty that I can’t be there with them to share the same feelings.”

“I’m 47, from East Jerusalem. …

“I spent something like 23 years of my life in prison. The last time was 20 years, and I got out 18 months ago.

“I have a master’s in regional and Israeli studies. I have two BAs – one in business administration and one in political science. I got them in prison.

“In prison, they prevented us from studying. We smuggled books and set up classes in the cells. Sometimes, the guards would take the books, but I kept going. It was important to do something for my future.

“First time I went to prison, during the first Intifada, I was about 13. … It was awful. They beat me so much, accused me of throwing stones at Israeli soldiers. They beat me to make me say I did it, … but I didn’t. After 40 days, the court released me.

“There’s a kind [of beating in custody] that everyone goes through, the ‘shabah’.

‘It was important to do something for my future,’ Shadi says [Dylan Hollingsworth/Al Jazeera]

“You’re tied to a chair for something like five days. Five whole days, you’re not allowed to sleep. If you faint, they beat you to wake you up. I was a child.

“The fourth time, I was in prison for about 18 months, accused of burning Israeli cars, throwing stones and being in an illegal organisation, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

“Afterwards, I went to study abroad and was captured by Israeli forces in early 2002 after I returned. I was in prison 20 years.

“After Gaza, we feel they can arrest us any time. They arrested many of my friends from prison and they – Israeli intelligence – keep calling me, threatening me.

“Every time I hear a noise, I wake up and look out the window. Are they coming for me? When they come, it’s not just for you.

“They come at dawn when everyone’s sleeping. Usually they blow the door open and storm the house, destroying everything. They beat your family. They beat you in front of them, and they keep beating you in prison.”

“I didn’t imagine myself painting these ugly pieces of the wall, but it started when my first studio was in Ramallah and I was living in Jerusalem, so I had to cross three checkpoints daily, and one day, I was going to my studio, full of energy. It was a beautiful day, and I was thinking: ‘I’m going to be free. I’m going to go to my studio to think.’

“But every day, I’m passing this gray concrete wall that separates my dad’s house from my uncle’s, forcing them to live in two different states just because someone decided to have the separation.

“I went to the studio that day and thought about how this is occupying my head. I’m not free. I’m painting and producing inside a prison. I can’t consider myself a free artist like this.

“So the first thing for me was to break through the mental and physical barrier, so I painted myself sitting on the couch, smoking a cigarette, and the wall is behind me and I pretend that I’m not seeing it.

“And from that moment, when I painted it, … it was kind of erasing this wall from my mind.

“I liked the concept, and I started to tell more stories. The one behind me now, it’s me and my wife getting married in front of the wall because this wall was made to put someone inside a prison. The people you want to put inside a prison, they’re either criminals or they’ve done something wrong. We didn’t. We’re getting married, so why should we be in this cage?

“I would love one day to be a nonpolitical artist, just to do things about the beauty of this place – the birds, the beach, the trees, the beautiful desert we have here.

“But when I try to do nonpolitical work, it doesn’t work. If you want to make a sketch of a landscape, then you find the separation wall in the middle of it, so your work turns into a political work.”

“I think the racist bias that we see in the West is that there’s only a focus when violence comes from us, from the Palestinians, not when it comes from the Israelis every day.

“You know, in 2022 and 2023, the Israeli army was killing a Palestinian nearly every week. There were at least 250 night raids into homes a month.

“They’re waking up people. They’re terrorising children. That’s trauma. The settlers, who are protected by the army, are burning olive trees and cars and terrorising villages. This has been happening every week.

“That doesn’t make headlines. The headline starts when an Israeli is killed, and that’s the problem.

“People think that October 7 was the start. Things started way, way before. Decades before.”

“I don’t want any Jew, Israeli or Palestinian to be killed in the future. But for that to happen, we need to see where the source of that violence is.

“The source is the systemic, brutal violence of the occupation, of the apartheid system, of the dehumanisation of Palestinians.

“And that can only end if we end that, if we decolonise and if we end the very injustices that have driven us to today.”
